In the eighteenth, born under Mount Sumeru. Why is that? Just as a king's throne is seized by his subjects, the qualities of the guru are destroyed by the disciple. In such a future life, apart from hell, there is nowhere else to go, one says oneself. If that teacher does not pervade twelve yojanas away, then appoint a regent and grant permission. That should also be met at the time of each year, offering delightful enjoyment with devotion. (197) Thus it is said. Also, in the "Condensed Collection of Tantric Meanings," it is said: Even if one's own qualities are immeasurable, if the guru does not permit it, one should remain silent and abandon all the conduct of the wise and accomplished. Even though possessing enjoyment and perfection, one should abandon food and clothing, endure suffering, take a low position, and abandon coquettish practices. What is said should also be practiced in accordance with its meaning. Thus it is said. If the guru gives permission, one must also practice evil deeds and things that should not be done, which appear to be ignorant in the eyes of the world. As it says in the "Self-Arisen Tantra": You steal, plunder, take armies, beat, insult, despise others, act crazy, do shameless and fearless deeds, do all kinds of things that should not be done, as such permission is given, you must practice according to the teachings. Work, trade, take a wife, be jealous, fight, land, houses, connect cows and sheep, etc., as such permission is given, you must practice secretly without hesitation. Thus it is said. Some people hear little and think much, if taught in that way, will they not become qualified spiritual friends? No. The qualities of the guru should also be sought as stated in the tantras, and one should not just follow whichever is greater, greed or affliction, or whichever has a good reputation. (198) The "Collection of All Eight Teachings" says: In the future, sentient beings with little merit will not encounter holy beings, and unqualified black teacher demons will appear, therefore, one must abandon mistakes. Thus it is said. If it is not like that, then that guru who possesses all the qualities, no matter how the clothing and appearance may appear, is certainly a holy person. He will not teach evil conduct, and if he does teach, it is certainly for the purpose of taming his own mindstream, and it is a teaching with secret intent. Just as Panchen Naropa relied on the lotus feet of Tilopa, one must do it without hesitation. Therefore, as it is reasonable.

It is imperative to comply, as the tantra states: "Serve the guru by teaching the Dharma, bestow vows and administer monasteries, gather retinues of disciples into sanghas, be equal in benefiting others, in joy and sorrow, cultivate and propagate the teachings in secluded places, even if it means dying, be diligent in this, without laziness or laxity." Therefore, it is essential to act as instructed. Regarding how to serve the guru when they have passed away or are still alive, the tantra also states: "When passed away (199), offer the offerings of the deceased; when alive, offer the offerings of delight. If the offerings of the deceased are not made after passing away, it is a major root downfall, and liberation from the lower realms is impossible. If these are violated, then erect one hundred and eight images of the guru and offer three types of offerings, continuously offering them for six months. The offering of the body is one hundred thousand prostrations; the offering of speech is one thousand confessions; the offering of mind is one hundred lamps. Offer for the first six months, and thereafter maintain the offerings at the appropriate times." It also says: "To the guru's mother and son, as well as to spiritual brothers and sisters, also in accordance with their rank, diligently offer respect and service with equal, similar, and one-third portions. If there is a violation, then offer one hundred and eight confessions." Thus, for the sequence of permissions and prohibitions, through the force of merit, with the two aspects of thought and action that are capable of being accomplished, by examining with great reason, the qualities of the five paths are grasped in the palm of the hand. Temporarily enjoying the glory of higher realms, and ultimately effortlessly reaching the ground of definite goodness. That is to say, in this way, by fully serving the noble guru with a great accumulation of merit, one abides in the guru's presence, and at that time, by engaging in vast hearing and thinking (200), one practices the path of accumulation. By tasting the nectar of the Dharma spoken, one forcefully applies oneself to non-conceptual wisdom, which is the path of preparation. By manifestly showing the ultimate truth, which is the nature of reality, without any inherent existence, and difficult to see with any analogy, through the four modes of expression and so forth, one attains the path of seeing. By cutting off the obstacles and deviations of falling into the two extremes of clinging to meditation and non-meditation, one understands that meditation without gathering or scattering is all-pervasive, vast, and spontaneously accomplished, which is the path of meditation. By bringing the intention to its ultimate measure with the four great confidences, one reaches the ultimate path of learning, without meditation.
