One must obtain a single piece of advice by any means necessary. Therefore, as previously stated, no matter which of the six realms one wanders in, one should understand that there is no happiness even the size of a needlepoint, only suffering. Even if one has only a little understanding (181), merely being disgusted with it will not liberate one from suffering; one must wholeheartedly adopt the methods that are beneficial for it. What is that? In the "Sutra of Advice to King Clear," it says: "Great king, at that time, there is no protector or refuge other than the sacred Dharma. The sacred Dharma at that time is the protector, refuge, support, island, and ally." What is said here is not merely reading black letters, but like extracting butter from milk and smoke from fire, one should rely solely on the root of the path—the virtuous friend—and extract the essence. As stated in the "Compendium": "The wise teachers should always be relied upon. Why? Because the qualities of wisdom arise from them. Just as a sick person relies on a doctor for healing, one should rely on a virtuous friend without laziness." Therefore, the characteristics of the lama to be relied upon are: In the "Heap of Jewels Sutra," Maitreya asked: "How should one rely on a virtuous friend?" The Buddha replied: "A virtuous friend is one who, whatever Dharma they teach, always keeps in mind the essence of the Dharma, the ultimate truth, and clearly explains (182) it; one should be led from the straight path." Based on this, as stated in the "Ornament of the Sutras," one who has well-tamed their mind-stream with the three higher trainings, not just one-sidedly, but has extensively listened, which is the quality of scriptural transmission. The training of wisdom that realizes suchness is a superior quality that far surpasses the disciples. With the power of discernment that fully distinguishes the meaning of the scriptures with reason, being skilled at pleasing the ears of those to be tamed and leading them to the ultimate path. Without being attached to gain and respect, having compassion for the vulnerable beings. Having diligence without weariness in accomplishing the benefit of others. A virtuous lama is needed who is tireless in repeatedly teaching and has the courage to endure wrong views.

Here are gathered: the master who is skilled at cutting off external false discriminations, the kind master who reveals the secret mantra instructions, the root master who reveals the secret mind-essence of no-birth, the master of the basis of self-nature, the master of pure self-mind, the master of indicative appearances, and the masters of the lineage of individuals. (183) Incidentally, let's also talk about the characteristics of a disciple. The Klong gsal tantra says: A disciple who is not a suitable vessel has little knowledge, likes to argue, cares a lot about face, is clever with words but bad at actions, is cunning and deceitful, breaks the master's words, argues about kindness, does not see virtues but picks on faults, has a bad lineage and bloodline, despises kindness, praises himself, has corrupt practice of the ultimate samaya, and if the disciple is not examined, the master becomes an enemy. As it is said, examination should come first, and the person to be taught should have the characteristics, as it says in the Clear Light Tantra, Rigpa Rangshar: He has great strength of faith and diligence, great wisdom and little attachment, is very pure and practices secret mantras, has no conceptualization and no distraction in his mind, keeps his vows and strives in practice. As it is said, that's all. If such a master and disciple are united, just as a two-winged bird flies effortlessly in the sky, it is not so difficult to achieve enlightenment, so the disciple should also rely on a master who has the characteristics, and he himself should also be clear about where the faults that contradict the scriptures are. After thoroughly recognizing them, he should restrain his mind with remedies. (184) After that, relying on a spiritual friend, there are two ways of truly relying: relying with thought and relying with action. The former is as stated in the Jewel Box Sutra: Faith is like a mother going first, protecting and increasing all virtues, eliminating doubts, and liberating from all rivers. Faith is a symbol of a happy and auspicious city. Faith is without impurity and purifies the mind. It abandons pride and is the root of respect. Faith is the best of wealth, treasures, and feet. Like a hand, it is the root of accumulating merit. As it is said, one should not have a casual relationship with the spiritual friend, but rather generate unwavering faith from the depths of one's heart, just as the noble Constant Time Bodhisattva Dharma Victory sees virtues. This is necessary. Because of our impure karma, even for a master who has the characteristics, we must use correct measure, provisional meaning, and expedient.
