Then, contemplate the suffering of animals and train the mind. As it says in the Letter to a Friend: "Even in the animal realm, there is killing and, in the guidance on the meaning of the three virtues, various sufferings such as binding and beating. For those who have become peaceful and abandoned virtue, one eats the other, which is extremely hateful." Thus, animals are divided into two types: submerged and scattered, and their types are summarized. Contemplate the suffering described in the Chapter on Grounds and take it to heart. Again, due to one's own afflictions, which are like the darkness of ignorance, in an instant, in the great outer ocean, visualize the submerged animals such as fish, conches, and crocodiles being born in a dense, porridge-like manner, with no space between them. Sometimes, when one becomes large, the smaller ones pierce the body from deep within, causing pain like an arrow hitting the heart. Sometimes, when one becomes small, the larger ones swallow them whole, causing suffering like being trapped in an iron cage. In the outer edges of this Jambudvipa and other continents, between the two iron mountain ranges, in the darkness where there is no light from the sun and moon, one experiences suffering in the darkness where one cannot even see one's own arms outstretched. Scattered animals, such as birds, wild animals, insects, bees, and predators, experience natural suffering such as cold, heat, hunger, and thirst. One eats the other. Tonight, at this very moment, for a short time like hail falling (168), life is at the boundary between inside and outside. Everything that people and others see with their eyes is seen as executioners with weapons in their hands, and all appearances are filled with suspicion. While eating a mouthful of food, one's head is distracted, looking in eight directions. In particular, hunters, fishermen, and bird catchers kill them in an instant with countless merciless terrors. All the possessed animals, such as horses, cattle, sheep, goats, and yaks, are also fitted with iron mouth cages and made to suffer by riding them on long journeys. Some are turned upside down, and their warm chests are cut open with sharp knives, their entrails are taken out, and their life's breath is cut off. Others have their noses pierced, their wings cut, are beaten, have live blood drawn, and are forced to carry heavy loads. Similarly, there are also for the nagas

Hunger, and the fear of vultures, and mantras, and one abandoning another, unable to gather together and without friends, and the suffering of common ignorance, etc., and the experience of uncertain lifespan, etc., all those animals are of a nature that does not know what to take and what to abandon. Thinking about each of these (169) sufferings, one should develop disgust for samsara. The Omniscient One said: After thinking about these, in order to liberate from the animal realm, in order to accomplish the benefit and happiness of those who desire liberation, establish the good path of higher rebirth and definite goodness, and diligently devote yourself to virtue day and night! Thus he said. Those also eventually gradually experience suffering, and in the end, they are born as nagas. A vulture carries them into the sky, and now, whether breathing in or out, they have reached the boundary of this life and the next. Ah, how terrifying! Such a powerful and terrifying bird preys on oneself as living food. Alas! Fear! Fear! Alas! Alas! Just the scattering of thoughts causes one to experience the taste of fear. Then, in the sky above, the root guru appears in the form of the Great Master of Oddiyana, saying: Alas, sentient beings of bad karma, suffering such pain and fear, are all because in endless samsara they only cling to cherishing themselves. Now, if you cultivate the extraordinary bodhicitta (170) of cherishing others more than yourself, that is the way to be liberated from this. In the past, when the lord of the teachings, Shakya Simha, was learning the conduct of bodhicitta, he was born as a girl named Friend Girl. Although her mother protected her, she did not listen and climbed on her mother's head to go to the sea to fetch jewels, and the boat sank. Grabbing a plank of wood, she drifted to an island. Then, proceeding in order, somehow, in an iron house, an iron wheel was spinning on a person's head, drilling into the center of the brain. When asked what he had done, he said it was the result of climbing on his mother's head. Thinking, "Ah, I too have been brought here by karma," a voice came from the sky saying: "Whoever is bound will be liberated, whoever is liberated will be bound." After saying this, the wheel appeared on his own head and spun, causing unbearable suffering.
