Thinking, 'May they be liberated from suffering,' as soon as this thought arises, negative karma is instantly exhausted, and immediately transferred to the heart of the great Orgyen (Uddiyana), thinking of becoming a noble guide leading beings. Observe the self-nature of whatever happiness and suffering appear, and settle awareness in its natural state. Then contemplate the suffering of the pretas (163): In the Letter to a Friend, it says: 'In the realm of pretas, too, due to the lack of desires, the suffering that arises is continuous and cannot be pacified. The suffering caused by cold, heat, fatigue, and fear is extremely unbearable.' Thus, it is said that there are three types of pretas. Take the gross suffering into your mind: Again, due to being influenced by attachment and clinging to food, clothing, and possessions, and due to the thought of being stingy towards offerings and reverence in special places, instantly contemplate being born as an outer-obscured preta. Contemplate enjoying the fruits of trees and rivers, etc., and after going a long distance exhausted, being guarded by people holding weapons, and seeing unpleasant things like pus and blood, feeling very ashamed and unable to bear the suffering of hunger and thirst. Or, the inner-obscured preta in a desolate place, such as a yellow, empty city, without any desired objects like water and plants, suffering from not finding food and drink for years and months. Even if a little medicine is found, it cannot fit into a mouth the size of a needle's eye. Even if a little fits, it cannot pass through a throat as thick as a horse's tail (164). Even if it passes through, a stomach as big as Mount Meru cannot be filled, and limbs as thin as reeds cannot support the body, etc., experiencing extremely miserable suffering. The special-obscured preta, after food and drink enter the stomach, those things also burn, and the body is burned. Eating one's own flesh, and living by eating feces and urine, is very pitiful. When the body is warm, the cold touch of the moon also becomes scorching. When the winter is bitterly cold, the rays of the sun also become cool, and the cold and heat are uneven. Just by looking at rivers, the rivers dry up, and unpleasant dry valleys appear, etc., experiencing immeasurable suffering of hunger and thirst. Know that such suffering is not short-lived, but must be experienced for fifteen thousand years, therefore contemplate feeling disgusted and discouraged.

Then, in the sky in front, the root guru appeared in the form of the Great Orgyen (Padmasambhava), saying, "Alas! The suffering you have accumulated due to stinginess has fallen upon you without omission, and even the Buddhas of the three times cannot save you. As Shakyamuni Buddha said to King Rupin, take ownership of karma and meditate on the joy of exhausting bad karma. With a compassionate mind, feel compassion for the suffering of sentient beings like yourself, generate the courage to take on the addition of your own suffering, and rely on the antidote!" As soon as he heard these words, A-tsa-ma! Just by cherishing sentient beings like myself, I have wandered in endless samsara until now and experienced such suffering. Even the pretas of the same kind as me, as numerous as the grains of sand in the Ganges River, have the same suffering, which is very pitiful. Now, I will endure my own suffering and gladly take on the suffering of other sentient beings. May the city of pretas be destroyed from its foundation!" In the instant of thinking this, bad karma was exhausted immediately, and he became one with the mind of the Great Orgyen and attained Buddhahood. Thinking that those sentient beings were also led by the light from my heart, one should consult the khenpo of the remaining place. Regarding the hells mentioned above, the Vinaya Sutra says, "Then, Maudgalyayana's son reached the edge of the ocean and saw many short-lived sentient hells, such as mortars, brooms (166), and trees, tormented by suffering." And, the neighboring hells are located on both sides of the eight hot hells, and their respective locations are stated in the Supreme Vehicle Treasury: "Short-lived hells exist in various places of earth, water, fire, and wind, without a fixed place. Neighboring hells are located around the two sets of eight." This is a generalization by one category. Regarding the pretas just mentioned, the Omniscient Great Master (Longchenpa) also said, "Pretas wander in the expanse of the dharma realm and abide in the expanse." Abiding in the expanse are the former three. Pretas who wander in the sky or are minute are mentioned in the Root Tantra of the Wooden Horse: "The ghosts of pretas who wander in the sky, as well as yakshas, rakshasas, tsan spirits, and kings, etc." As stated above, it should be explained in detail to students with sharp faculties, otherwise, a brief explanation will achieve the purpose.
