Ra, these worlds are bound! In short, to summarize "self-grasping": Being attached and clinging to homeland and possessions, one postpones practicing the Dharma. Even when finding a needle and thread, one makes offerings to the gods. Even when losing shoelaces and buttons, one feels heartache; these are external self-graspings. One divides the Dharma into sectarian factions, viewing one's own side as gods and the other side as demons. Without examining the qualities of one's own mindstream, even if one happens to sit at the head of Shakyamuni Buddha's assembly, one thinks, "I am an Atop"; these are internal self-graspings. The generation stage has real clinging, the generation stage has sectarian bias, the completion stage has object (589) fixation. One says from the mouth that all dharmas are empty and without self, but one is attached to the essence of emptiness, clinging tightly like being infatuated with the body of a seductive woman. One peeks secretly, thinking, "Who has a practice like mine?" Because there is no one to ask and talk to, one wastes one's life meaninglessly; these are secret self-graspings. If I tell you honestly, if you can abandon the attachment to homeland and possessions from the depths of your heart, then you have completed half of your Dharma practice. When I first entered the gate of definitive meaning, I was able to discard self-grasping like discarding the ashes of spit, because I occupied a firm position, opened the door to gathering retinues of disciples, and became a source of the ability to benefit others. Limitless intentions and wisdom arose to tame disciples with skillful means, and I only took a few temporary necessities as my own, but said they were treasures, said they must be cherished, said they could only be used after death. Without easily believing these superficial words (590), one should mainly make offerings to the Three Jewels, ransom the lives of sentient beings, respect the Sangha, and incidentally give alms to beggars, etc. Do not let the things of life and death be wasted in vain, and do not accumulate like bees building a nest. Those who are not burdened with a storehouse but approach you on their own, although you may not feel ashamed, death is something that everyone will encounter, please keep this in mind. The Dharma has no sectarian bias, so please practice pure perception towards all things as much as possible. Because I have observed all phenomena, each place seems very profound, but in the end, I am satisfied with the view of the Great Perfection. The root downfall is placed in the Dharmadhatu. Now, based on the premise of not allowing those preliminary practices of cultivation to become empty talk because they are used in the aspect of view, enter the main practice.

In this context, I vow to remain in the uninhabited valley, accompanied by the wisdom that is without friends, maintaining the unaltered state of reality. Regarding the words of good and bad, hope and worry (591), I will not make judgments or arguments of truth or falsehood, but let them speak for themselves, like the words left by the dead. The difficulty of obtaining a human body, the coincidence of encountering the Dharma, the rarity of qualified lamas, the many paths of demonic intrusion, the impermanence of life and the possibility of death at any time, contemplating the torments and sufferings of worldly families, one must have a revulsion towards samsara, like giving roasted barley flour to someone suffering from bile disease. If it is not like this, but instead one is busy with exorcism, seeking good patrons, wearing warm clothes, living in comfortable places, listening to pleasant words, and doing things that conform to worldly customs, then one is already controlled by demons before practicing the Dharma. In general, even if one utters profound teachings, if one cannot subdue the demon of self-grasping and the desire for comfort, it will be revealed by superficial actions. The saying "measuring by dreams" must be understood. Those who receive the salaries of great officials are also like this, as it is said (592), "Those who have power also have sin." If one thinks carefully about the source of those riches and clamor, not only will one not increase one's own virtuous deeds, but also "black offerings are the razor of life, eating too much will cut off the lifeline of liberation," and in the end, one may very likely fall into the abyss of hell. One must think carefully about this, rely on a simple life, and abandon worldly customs. The past saints taught, "Reduce food intake, control sleep, and straighten the mind." As they said, if one eats too much, afflictions will arise strongly, and if one cannot control one's food intake, one will indulge in drumming, singing, and exorcism, claiming that one cannot survive without doing so. One fears becoming busier than a dog in the marketplace, so one must be moderate. Alcohol is the source of all evils, so do not drink more than a cupful. If one cannot abstain from meat, one should eat it in moderation and practice the yoga of food according to my (593) practice. Regarding how to perform lasting virtuous deeds, it is difficult to measure with one standard for people of superior, middling, and inferior faculties, and for each person's specific circumstances, but generally speaking, we of Glorious Mountain
