If we take the example of three years and five months, one should wake up at the crack of dawn and immediately jump out of bed. The impure air in the body should be expelled through nine breaths, so that the breath becomes clear. Then, after completing the preliminary practices, one should offer intense prayers, even shedding tears of emotion. By practicing the common and uncommon methods of liberation, the oral transmissions, and the completion stage of the winds and bindus in one session, one must first develop perseverance in the pain of the winds. After a while, all obstacles will naturally be cleared, the winds will return to their natural state, the movement of the right and left channels and the essential points of the thirty-two and a half channels will be purified, and one will understand the changes of long days and short nights, and the life force will merge into one. It is like observing a large, round vase with a base with one's eyes (594), and the common and uncommon signs of the path will also become manifest. Therefore, it is important not to engage in wind practices that are short in duration and unclear in focus, as they will not be of great benefit. After that, one should enjoy hot tea or tsampa and make burnt offerings. Immediately afterwards, one should enter into the session of recitation and practice. In this, one should focus on the nature of the generation stage, which is free from attachment, the clear face and hands of the deity, and the clear visualization of the compassionate rays of light radiating and withdrawing, so that one can master the skills of the generation and completion stages. Unlike some people nowadays, who simply take desire as the path, like fishermen or merchants, doing whatever they can, or like old women reciting mani mantras, there will be no result. Such a practice should end around noon, with water offerings, confession of sins, spontaneous offerings, and the recitation of texts such as Ushnishavijaya, Jnanasattva, and various rituals, dharanis, and aspiration prayers as the conclusion. If there is time to quickly write about eight pages of texts (595), or in the absence of special circumstances, practice Tögal. Then, at lunchtime, one should recite many special dharanis over the meat, generate compassion, and after reciting aspiration prayers, visualize the body as the deity and enjoy the yoga of food. Recite the Sutra of Purifying Defilements. After that, perform two or three hundred prostrations, and recite the aspiration prayers of the sutras and tantras, and so on. Immediately afterwards, one should go to bed and focus solely on the visualization and recitation of the yidam, and the recitation of many different kinds of yidams has reached an unimaginable level. In the evening, one should perform a tsok offering, make a torma offering, and perform the subsequent rituals, etc.

A Brief Account of the Completion Stage. Pray with intense longing for the realization of clear light, and pray with impartial aspiration for the fulfillment of wishes for oneself and all other beings. After practicing one session of breath control, enter the yoga of sleep. Each time you wake up, do not let delusion spread, but focus your mind on one point, and the effect will be very good. In short, during these three years, I was not picky about the amount of food. I managed to live on only one coarse cloth robe. I did not utter a single word in the hermitage. Even when the attendant was inside, I never went beyond the inner hermitage separated by the inner and outer paper doors. I developed renunciation and sorrow for samsara, and a firm belief that I would die at any time. Therefore, I did not say a single idle word or spontaneous joke, etc., so those who followed me were given the name of hermits. They piled up stones at the door. They let delusion spread. Outside, speaking was like a crow, and making noise was like tinnitus. Meeting people at the door of the hermitage, telling stories of Han, Tibetan, and Mongolian people, etc., the six senses all went out. The essence of the retreat was lost, appearances were scattered outward, accomplishments disappeared outward, obstacles were attracted inward, and the state of mind was let loose and out of control (597), ending the days of the annual retreat and the monthly retreat. The stream of consciousness did not improve by even a hair's breadth compared to before, so never end the retreat in such a vulgar way. You must develop backbone in your heart, whether you are sick, have a fever, are about to die, are in retreat, are practicing the generation stage, are practicing the completion stage, are writing, are reciting scriptures, whatever you do, do not abandon the unspeakable nature of your own mind. Do not tighten too much, do not loosen too much, there is nothing to practice, and there is not a single bit of distraction. Do not transform or modify the present awareness, and do not separate from it. Once you separate from it, you will give yourself to delusions that you do not know what will arise, and as a result, the great practitioner's mind will become broad, he will have some understanding of the Dharma, he will have some recognition of the guru, he will criticize his Dharma friends, he will accumulate wealth, he will be busy with social activities, and he will be busy with all kinds of trivial matters without doing the right thing. At this time, brainless people will say, 'The Dharmakaya has merit,' 'The benefit of others is vast.' Being complacent is a sign of demonic intrusion (598).
