If there are three paths of losing ground, if you do not recognize their respective characteristics, you will not be able to distinguish between right and wrong. Therefore, here I will reveal their flaws: If you do not understand that emptiness is originally empty and selfless, free from the four or eight extremes of elaboration, and that the present awareness, beyond thought and free, is itself rigpa, but instead, like the lower vehicles, analyze with the mind of affirmation and negation of existence and non-existence, considering emptiness to be "nothing at all"; or like the lower tantras, practice emptiness with mantras such as "Svabhava" (Tibetan: སྭ་བྷཱ་ཝ།, Sanskrit Devanagari: स्वभाव, Sanskrit Romanization: svabhāva, Chinese literal meaning: self-nature), merely clinging to the clarity-emptiness of samadhi, and experiencing it as if it were an illusion, then you are mistaken. Similarly, shamatha is the pacification of subtle and coarse thoughts in their own place, the mind itself is free from the waves of wandering thoughts, and the aspect of remaining clear and bright is self-knowing and self-illuminating. If you do not understand this, but understand shamatha as a state of unconscious blankness, then you are mistaken. (565) Vipassana is the spontaneous manifestation of both abiding and movement as the nature of awareness, the clarity, sharpness, and non-attachment of the wisdom of awareness. If you do not understand this, but use thought to analyze abiding and movement, then you are mistaken. Although there are various views on "samahita" and "post-samahita," in the self-language of Dzogchen, "samahita" refers to abiding in the state of maintaining awareness of the essence of whatever arises; "post-samahita" refers to the aspect of manifesting various emanations and transformations in that state of awareness. If you do not understand this, but consider focusing on the state of emptiness as "samahita," and then arising from that state, interpreting all appearances as illusory emptiness, and calling it "post-samahita," then you are mistaken. Non-distraction refers to genuine, primordial awareness, without being controlled by confused thoughts or falling into a state of non-mentation. If you are merely cautious and vigilant to avoid distraction, or bound by the oppression and entanglement of suffering, then you are mistaken. Ordinary awareness refers to the present (566) awareness, undefiled by any good or bad, maintaining this natural state and guarding it with the continuity of awareness. If you do not understand this, but identify ordinary worldly thoughts as ordinary awareness, then you are mistaken. Non-meditation refers to merging into the natural state, removing the attachment to meditating or not meditating, without any fabrication or fixation of the mind, establishing a firm foundation in vast awareness. If you are merely in a state of abandoning everything in a mediocre way, or falling into a state of non-mentation where "nothing is anything," then you are greatly mistaken.

That is wrong. The so-called "effortless spontaneity" refers to not negating the naturally arising thoughts, not analyzing or examining them, and not following them. Instead, it means relaxing the one who generates the thoughts into their own awareness, allowing them to abide naturally, unobstructed and unimpeded. It is wrong to follow thoughts whimsically and engage in speculation. Similarly, there are three deviations: attachment to bliss leads to rebirth in the desire realm; attachment to clarity (567) leads to rebirth in the form realm; attachment to non-thought leads to rebirth in the formless realm, which are called deviations. To explain their definitions and errors: "Bliss" refers to the joyful and blissful experience that is not tainted by the three great fundamental sufferings, and one is unwilling to part from that state. It does not refer to the bliss of contaminated desire, or the feeling of happiness and joyful thoughts that are transformed by external circumstances. "Clarity" refers to the unobstructed clarity of the banner of awareness or the gateway of manifestation, without being tainted by obstacles such as dullness or sinking. It does not refer to the appearance of objects, such as colors and shapes, or the self-nature of illusory appearances. "Non-thought" refers to the non-thought-like space, free from the movement and disturbance of non-moving, nine-moving, clinging, and confused thoughts. It does not refer to the cessation of sensation like fainting (568), or the darkness like deep sleep. In short, if one does not understand that these three experiences are merely spontaneous occurrences as signs of the path, and hopes for them to arise and deliberately cultivates them, or clings to and becomes attached to what has arisen as genuine meditation, then one will not transcend the cause of falling into the three realms. Similarly, there are four ways to stray: straying into emptiness as an object of knowledge, straying into emptiness as a path, straying into emptiness as an antidote, and straying into emptiness as proliferation. Although each of these can be divided into innate straying and temporary straying, in general, if one does not understand the key point of the nature of ultimate emptiness being primordially pure, liberated from fabricated phenomena and the bonds of conceptual imputation, the present awareness being primordially pure and vast, but instead, on the level of appearance, one proliferates with emptiness, as if establishing emptiness separately.
