In the profound realm of Lapai Chö, due to immediate causes such as intense turbulence and fear, the meditation previously tamed with intimacy, merely acknowledging and fixating on clarity and emptiness, the khenpo who meditates happily and joyfully, and the experience of shamatha, like a bee stuck to honey, that fixation vanishes, and the essence of awareness, in a clear and non-conceptual state, all phenomena of samsara and nirvana naturally abide in their own place. Devoid of clinging to existence, non-existence, permanence, cessation, etc., a state like the center of the sky arises, which Mahamudra calls "small freedom from elaboration." At this time, those with little learning and not grasped by the holy lama, because the previous (502) experience of bliss, clarity, and non-conceptuality has vanished, think, "Has my meditation been lost?" and become restless, with many thoughts, and even feel weary. Those with great pride think, "There is no meditation" or "This is it," and rush into activities for the benefit of others, carried away by distraction. At that time, recognizing these as obstacles, abandoning both discouragement and excessive partiality, the present awareness should be made to suffice as meditation. It is important to be without clinging and without error, with an unlabelled non-statement devoid of the arrogance of awareness. Second, the middling yogi is: As it says, "The stain of clinging to emptiness, the defilement of mind and phenomena, is removed. Whatever arises, thoughts and concepts, without object, rootless realization, is called the middling yogi of the path of seeing." Therefore, the previous clarity and emptiness like the center of the sky, transcending the extremes of existence, non-existence, permanence, and cessation, after certainty arises about it, the subtle clinging to emptiness that exists falls away like a snake's skin. Whatever thought arises, without needing to add to it with focused clinging and mindfulness, the conceptual thought is naturally empty, and a rootless, baseless state will arise. This goes by the nature of mere mindfulness. If mindfulness is not illuminated with clarity, (503) it is no different from the ordinary, so at this time, one should be undistracted, not meditating, placing the core of view on the essence, which Mahamudra calls "middling freedom from elaboration." Third, as it says, "Appearances are known as mind, and the nature of mind is also rootless, but there is clinging to emptiness, a subtle defilement of mind, which is called the great yogi of the path of seeing." Therefore, when established by conceptual thought, appearances are understood as the magical display of mind. Placing mind on appearances, appearances and mind are inseparable.

Now, it is liberated from the root severance. Although it appears as if the emptiness clinging on its own nature has disappeared, when measured by the higher path, there is still a subtle emptiness clinging in the awareness that is contaminated by the defilements of the mind. This is similar to what is said in the Mind Section of the Great Perfection that samadhi is not harmed by factors such as sinking and excitement. There is nothing here that needs to be done as the essence of commitment, and if the key point is reached, the consciousness will be transformed, so even if you deliberately meditate, you will not be able to experience it. However, if you do not protect it with spontaneous mindfulness, the chance of separation is very high. Even so, in other explanations of the four unions, it is said that even if you do not meditate on this, there will be no distraction or confusion, and you will not be separated even in dreams (504). However, our own teachings say that even in the stage of the great path of meditation, there will be nocturnal illusions. Since it does not correspond to my own experience, I have put it aside. Why is that? Because spontaneous mindfulness, which is practiced day and night, is completely liberated from all defilements only at the time of enlightenment, and not at any other time. In the Prajnaparamita Vehicle, it is said: "The impure are sentient beings, the pure are Bodhisattvas, and the extremely pure are Tathagatas." This is distinguished from the perspective of the state, because different names are established according to the order of the ground and the path. Based on the fact that the realm of beings has the essence of the Sugata, the example of the defilements to be removed is also given by Lord Maitreya in the Uttaratantra: Ordinary beings bound by all bonds are like the example of the Buddha wrapped in lotus flowers, bees, husks, and mud. The ignorance that exists in the continuum of Hearers, Solitary Realizers, and Arhats obscures the essence of the Tathagata, like the example of the treasure of a poor man underground. The defilements of the Mahayana that are abandoned by seeing (505) that exist in the continuum of ordinary beggar beings, and the subtle, innate, and invisible differences in the continuum of noble beings. The two defilements that are abandoned by meditation are represented by the examples of husks and rags, especially here they are coarse. Because it functions in the path of seeing the truth, the defilements of the ten grounds of the path are also the defilements that depend on the lower seven impure grounds, and the defilements that depend on the upper three pure grounds are represented by the two examples of gold in the womb and mud. Therefore, it is said: "The defilements that depend on the seven grounds are the defilements of the womb, pure.
