These four yogic stages, based on the inconceivable Tantra of Ra-li, are taught with the intention of truly attaining realization, considering the merits of the grounds and paths. Although some ancient scholars have scrutinized them, as mentioned earlier, there is evidence to support the origin of the Ra-li Tantra. When Jowo-je (Atiśa) taught the co-emergent union together with his attendants, he quoted explanations of the four unions from the Hevajra Tantra. Therefore, those who refute it are undoubtedly shrouded in darkness. To consider this Tantra as not genuine is merely a biased view. Therefore, Yang Gonpa, Phawang Khawa, and others have also extensively explained it by quoting from it. As Rongpa Dzogchenpa said, we have inquired from the Vidyādhara Śrīsiṃha of Oddiyana, and there are similar aspects clear in the experiences of Tso-gyal (Yeshe Tsogyal). The great scholar Sogzlogpa also explained it in conjunction with the stages of practice of the Mind Series (p. 494). In particular, in the great Mind Treasure, the 'Uncontested Liberation, Self-Liberation of Intentions,' although the names of the four yogas are not explicitly mentioned, the manner of explanation follows the progression of the five paths of the Pāramitās, which is extremely profound. Therefore, for the benefit of gradual practitioners, we will explain it according to the intention of this examinable instruction. If one thinks, 'If the Great Perfection Tantras teach original liberation, then your explanation here as gradual is contradictory,' it is not so. The Teacher Vajradhara, being skilled in means, divided the path from the Śrāvakayāna to Atiyoga into nine stages, and also explained the superior, middling, and inferior faculties by further dividing them into subcategories. Therefore, although the Great Perfection is the path for those with extremely sharp faculties, it is not the case that all who enter it are exclusively those with extremely sharp faculties. Considering this, the Vidyādharas, based on the differences in middling and inferior faculties, also established such traditions. This approach should be seen as the activity (p. 495) of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, who are skilled in means and possess great compassion. Thus, with the sun of establishing and refuting, the darkness of wrong views is completely dispelled. Now, regarding the actual meaning to be expressed, first, similar to the practice path of the Pāramitās, the worldly yoga is explained, which is divided into large, medium, and small. First, the worldly...

My yoga is: From the bindu of liberation in the Great Perfection Heart Essence treasure, the essence is without grasping, the nature of emptiness; the nature is unceasing, sale sing-nge, naked. This is called the yoga of the small world. The understanding of this, explained through experience, is: A gradual person, in front of a virtuous lama, abandons distractions and meditates, thereby determining that the essence of the mind is separate from the four extremes of existence and non-existence. Having determined this, the clear and non-conceptual calm abiding is introduced and grasped as the nature of meditation, focusing on mindfulness and meditating, so that thoughts are more numerous than flies in the sunlight, and the changes are great, so one might think, "Is there no room for meditation?" After a feeling of wanting to give up arises, the nature of mindfulness is clear and uninterrupted. Clear (496), naked, from which arises a strong sense of emptiness, this state lasts as long as the meditation lasts. If one does not meditate, it will disappear as usual. This is called the small one-pointedness by Mahamudra. Some people think that this is an understanding obtained through boasting, which is not acceptable. Second, the yoga of the intermediate world is: From that, guarding without distraction, thereby obtaining greater stability, even if one meditates, the path of meditation will appear, the part of meditation, this is called the yoga of the intermediate world. Therefore, continuing on the basis of the former, generating joy and diligence, the grasping of experience is slightly clearer than before. Even in some times when one does not meditate, mindfulness will suddenly arise, and the state of clear emptiness and nakedness will appear, so this is called the intermediate one-pointedness by Mahamudra. Third, the yoga of the great world is: From that, the samadhi is brighter than before, effortlessly and continuously appearing day and night, this is called the yoga of the great world. Therefore (497), obtaining greater stability, the experience of clear emptiness and nakedness, separate from grasping, continuously arises day and night, this is called the great one-pointedness by Mahamudra. What the Great Perfection Mind Division people say, "The experience of abiding, awareness does not scatter outwards" is also the same here. In this experience, a feeling of bliss arises in the body, and immeasurable joy arises in the mind.
