The treasure of jewels. May the Lord grant me grace. After three times. Thus, the excellence of obtaining a human body, even just hearing the names of the Three Jewels has immeasurable benefits. Then, if one takes refuge from the depths of one's heart, needless to say, it will save one from the suffering of samsara and the lower realms. As it says in the Hundred Deeds Sutra: A bird descended from the sky and sat in front of me, did you see it? Answer: Venerable Bhagavan, I saw it. The Buddha said: Monks, that bird died because it developed joy towards me. After dying with joy, it was reborn in this Rajagriha, born into a merchant's family, and after growing up, it will go forth in my teachings. After going forth, at the age of only seven, he will abandon all defilements and personally attain the Arhat fruit. As (453) it is said, the cause and effect of relying on the Three Jewels is inconceivable, and the benefit of just taking refuge alone, if it were to become tangible, it would not fit in the space of the sky. As it is said: If refuge had a form, this sky would be too small. The ocean's water treasure, even if poured and measured, would not be exhausted. As it is said. Therefore, aiming only for temporary higher rebirth and one's own peace is a short-lived refuge. Therefore, with the mind of a great person, visualize all the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas vividly in the sky in front, and with faith and understanding in their qualities, in order to liberate all sentient beings equal to the extent of space from the ocean of suffering of samsara and attain the state of omniscience. Take refuge, and in accordance with this, with the love of seeing all sentient beings as parents, the compassion of knowing kindness, the joy of repaying kindness, (454) and the four altruistic thoughts without partiality, with the intention of generating aspiration with the superior intention, repeat this aspiration. The Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, etc., three times. Having taken refuge in this way, one must train in three trainings. First, the training of abstaining is: Having taken refuge in the Buddha, when oneself is in samsara, one should not take refuge in worldly gods and great powers.

Do not take refuge in worldly gods. Having taken refuge in the Dharma, do not harm sentient beings. Having taken refuge in the Sangha, do not associate with non-Buddhists or those who share their views. Secondly, the precepts to be practiced are: even fragments of Buddha images, the cloth covers of scriptures, and yellow patches of the Sangha's robes should be treated with respect. Thirdly, the conducive precepts are: rely on holy beings, listen to and contemplate the holy Dharma, and act in accordance with the Sangha. In all circumstances, strive to recite the refuge formula, never straying from mindfulness of the Three Jewels. Similarly, the precepts of aspiration are: all sentient beings (455) have been my parents in various lifetimes, so recognize their kindness, remember their kindness, and repay their kindness. With a vast and superior intention, generate the altruistic mind of cherishing others more than oneself, exchange self and others, and even treat others with a mind of equality between self and others. Only benefit others and do not generate even a slight intention to harm them. This is the way to accomplish the deeds that please the Buddhas. The eleventh verse says: "The greatest benefit to sentient beings is the greatest benefit to me; the greatest harm to sentient beings is the greatest harm to me. Since I and sentient beings share the same happiness and suffering, my form body is accomplished for the sake of sentient beings." Therefore, among conditioned virtues, there is no result greater than the mind of enlightenment, and it is the unerring cause for attaining perfect Buddhahood, so always abide in good thoughts. Having thus rectified your motivation, accumulate vast collections of merit (456), and in order to purify your mindstream with the seven-branch practice, before the assembly of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas filling the sky, with a mind of faith, prostrate, offer vast clouds of offerings, confess misdeeds with intense remorse, rejoice in the virtues of yourself and others, request the Buddhas and their emanations to turn the wheel of Dharma, beseech them not to pass into Nirvana, and dedicate the merit to perfect enlightenment. Keep the meaning of each of these practices especially in mind.
