Merely bound by the husk of afflictions, one can never be liberated. (324) In this way, in the three—preliminary practice, actual practice, and subsequent practice—emptiness and compassion both rely on the continuum, thereby engaging in the accumulation of all merit and wisdom, such as generosity. This is the common training of the small, medium, and great paths of accumulation. In the path of preparation, from the supreme dharma onwards, emptiness and compassion appear in order in both meditative equipoise and subsequent attainment. Having attained the path of seeing, emptiness and compassion are united even in subsequent attainment, and are inseparable. At that time, one will directly see the truth of the nature of reality upon reaching the first ground, the Joyful One. The objects to be abandoned at that time are the six afflictions of conceptual imputation: ignorance, desire, anger, pride, doubt, and views. There are five types of views: the view of the aggregates of existence, the view of holding to extremes, wrong views, the view of holding moral discipline and asceticism as supreme, and the view of holding views as supreme. The ten root afflictions, counted together, each occur ten times for each of the four truths in the desire realm, making forty. In the two upper realms, there are nine, excluding anger, each divided by the four truths, making thirty-six each, which, added to the previous, totals (325) one hundred and twelve. These are abandoned through the arising of the wisdom of the path, passing through the coarse ones. The subtle ones that are arising are actually abandoned. Having traversed the path of seeing in this way, thereafter, in the path of meditation of the noble ones, the small, medium, and great are further divided into nine. The objects to be abandoned are the six that are divided from the innate afflictions of latent tendencies: ignorance, desire, anger, pride, fear of views, and the view of holding to extremes. In the desire realm, each of these six has three types: great, medium, and small, making eighteen. And each of these is divided in this way, making fifty-four. In the form realm, the five remaining after abandoning anger are counted as before, making forty-five. Divided by the number of the four dhyanas, this makes one hundred and eighty. The same is true for the four formless realms, making one hundred and eighty. The two upper realms combined make three hundred and sixty, and adding the fifty-four of the desire realm makes four hundred and fourteen. Then, at the end of the ten grounds.

In the path of no more learning, with a vajra-like samadhi, destroying the subtle habitual imprints of the obscurations of knowledge, at that instant, one manifestly awakens to the ultimate fruit. As taught in the sixth chapter, without dwelling in quiescence, etc., one manifests all the qualities of the Buddhas, such as the eighteen unshared qualities, the ten powers, and the four fearlessnesses, and thus becomes truly enlightened. That is, the support is the body, the reliance is wisdom, and the activity is benefiting beings, these are the three. The first has three aspects: the Dharmakaya, the Sambhogakaya, and the Nirmanakaya. The first has two aspects: the Svabhavikakaya (essence body) and the Jnanadharmakaya (wisdom dharmakaya). The first is the utterly pure realm, the great equality, the aspect that constitutes the nature of the three kayas. As stated in the Ornament of Clear Realization: "The Svabhavikakaya of the Buddha is the undefiled dharmas, having attained all completely pure aspects, those whose nature is characterized by self-nature." The second is that when the adventitious obscurations, like clouds, dissipate, the self-radiance of that realm itself appears as a great, uncompounded luminosity, like the sun in the sky, characterized by both wisdom and cessation. "Luminosity, non-created, without differentiation, possessing entry into the Ganges' stream, Buddhas surpassing dust, possessing all dharmas." The second is that the power of the eight consciousnesses, including the Alaya, dissolving into the realm, from the perspective of this power, the manifestation of the basis of reality is established, perfecting all qualities, possessing five certainties: certainty of place: Akanishta Ghanavyuha; certainty of retinue: the Bodhisattvas of the ten bhumis; certainty of dharma: the Mahayana; certainty of teacher: the five Buddha families such as Vairochana; certainty of time: constantly abiding in the continuous turning of the wheel of dharma. As stated by Maitreya: "The body possessing various excellent dharma rays, diligently working for the liberation of beings, activity like a wish-fulfilling jewel king, various things are its nature." And: "The peaceful body appears like a wish-fulfilling tree, like a wish-fulfilling jewel, without conceptualization, constantly benefiting the world for the sake of liberating beings, this is free from elaboration and yet manifests." The third is that just as the moon's reflection appears when there is a water vessel, so it appears in the perception of those to be tamed.
