It is not born from that, not born from another. Not born from two, not born without a cause. Any object, wherever it may be, never arises. This is the first. The second is to negate by examining the result to be negated. For example, phenomena that appear in various ways are without substance, because the arising of a result from a cause, whether existent or nonexistent, is empty. If a pillar is established when the substance of the pillar exists, then the pillar (303) is already established, which is unreasonable. If it is established when it does not exist, then it is impossible for existence to arise from nonexistence, just as it is never possible for a substance to arise from a rabbit's horn. As the previous scripture says: For the meaning of nonexistence or existence, a cause is not suitable, for if it is nonexistent, what does it cause? If it exists, what does the cause do? This is the third, negating by examining both cause and result. Merely knowable things are not substantial, because they are not established as functional. Thus, phenomena that appear, in ultimate truth, whether one arises from one, or many arise from one, or many arise from many, or one arises from many, the arising in these four ways is empty. Just as space is considered a substance. In the Entering the Two Truths it says: Many do not produce one thing, many do not produce many. One does not produce many things, one does not produce one itself. This is the fourth, divided into two: negating by considering the non-affirmative reason as a thesis, that is, by examining the great dependent arising as its own entity; and negating by considering the negative reason as a thesis, that is, being separate from one and many. The first is that merely appearing phenomena are not substantial (304), because the phenomena that arise dependently and relationally are also separate from the eight extremes such as arising and ceasing, and therefore are empty of true nature, like the moon in water. As it is said: Whatever arises from conditions is unborn, because it has no nature of arising. And in the Root Wisdom it says: Apart from dependent arising, there are no phenomena. Therefore, apart from emptiness, there are no phenomena. The second is that phenomena that appear as meaningful are not substantial, because whatever is separate from one or many is pervaded by being empty of true substance. As the teacher Aryadeva says: Just as an instant has an end, who can set its beginning? The three instants of

Because of its self-nature. The world does not abide for an instant. Similarly, in the Refutation of Disputes, it is said: Since there is nothing to be refuted, I do not refute anything. Therefore, to say that I make refutations is your fabrication. If so, how is the establishment of the two truths? In the presence of those with wisdom who see this shore, it is merely applied based on conventions. However, in the true two truths, one cannot be accepted as one or two. If one, like abandoning the conventional, the ultimate would also become that fault, and like the conventional becoming tainted, the ultimate would also become such a fault, so it is harmful. If different, it is also not reasonable. As the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra says: Form is emptiness. Emptiness is form. Emptiness is not other than form. Form is not other than emptiness. Therefore, because of those meanings, the teacher is free from all commitments. He himself said: If I have some tenets, then I have this fault. Because I have no tenets, I am only without fault. Aryadeva also said: Existence and non-existence, and existence and non-existence, to whom no side exists, even after a long time, it is not possible to speak of disputes. Such wisdom is the means to distinguish between Dharma and non-Dharma and to destroy afflictions, as shown by what is called one's own tradition. In any place in India and Tibet, whatever is bound by one's own desires and attachments is established by inferior wisdom depending on each other. If all of them are cut off by being established by valid cognition, then the precious teachings of the Buddha will become a cause of contention, and the ways of angry disputes (306) will also be many, so many beings will fall into sectarian bias and step into the abyss of bad destinies. Therefore, when all the characteristics of established tenets are made to fall into decline, from among them, the reality that has the two qualities of taming and protecting, and the similar reality, and the non-reality that is contrary to it. The wisdom that makes the nature as it is, well and truly, will also arise from hearing, and it will destroy all the aggregates of afflictions. For those who are without afflictions, the demons cannot find an opportunity. The wisdom arising from meditation is shown here by what is called this. What should be ultimately taken as a habit here?
