Therefore, they consider the Sangha as a refuge. Second is the Sutra School. (285) Definition, divisions, and tenets are three. First, the definition of the Lesser Vehicle Sutra School is that it asserts both external objects and self-awareness as truly existent. Second, the divisions are two: Sutra School Following Scripture and Sutra School Following Reasoning. The first are those who follow the Vaibhashikas, asserting that the seven Abhidharma treatises are the works of Shariputra and others, and they assert this tenet accordingly. The second is explained from the seven treatises on valid cognition and so forth. Generally, treatises are written by individuals and may contain errors, so they consider the words of the Buddha to be valid authority, relying on the sutras to assert their tenets, and they are not attached to the names of dharma or persons. Because they explain dharmas in relation to examples, they are known as Exemplifiers. Third, the tenets are based on three aspects: ground, path, and fruition. Regarding the ground of phenomena, they assert that the number of truths is definitively two, and by what is the conventional truth established as true? It is by conventional consciousness, which is merely imputed by conceptual thought, because it obscures seeing the reality of the self-characterized nature of things. Therefore, the object of appearance of conceptual thought is pervaded by universals, and universals, non-existent phenomena, and conventional (286) truth are coextensive and equal. The object of appearance of direct perception is pervaded by particulars, and particulars, existent things, and ultimate truth are coextensive and equal. As it is said in the Pramanavarttika: "Whatever has the ability to perform a function, That is ultimately existent here. The other is conventionally existent, Those are the characteristics of self and universal." Furthermore, they also assert that atoms are without directional parts, and that consciousness is momentary and without parts, and so forth. However, unlike the Vaibhashikas, they do not assert that the three times are substantially existent, nor do they assert that space is a permanent entity, and so forth. Second, the object of the path is the sixteen aspects of the four truths, such as impermanence and so forth. However, merely practicing the wisdom that realizes the emptiness of the person, that is, realizing the emptiness of an independent, self-sufficient, substantially existent person, this practice, which is separate from skillful means, great compassion, and so forth, is the Lesser Vehicle's own path. Both the way of proceeding on the Buddha's path and the inferior path only establish the five paths, and do not establish the ten bhumis and so forth. What is to be abandoned is the grasping at a self of the person.

They only accept terms like ignorance with afflictions and ignorance without afflictions, but do not accept terms like clinging to the self of phenomena (287) and cognitive obscurations. Third, regarding the classification of results, by practicing the two accumulations of merit and wisdom for a long time, the seeds of both types of ignorance are uprooted. Through possessing three special qualities of abandonment and three special qualities of realization, the Sugata who has perfected his own benefit, and who ultimately protects others for the benefit of others, turns the wheel of the four truths for those to be trained, and places them on the path to maturation and liberation, is considered the result of unsurpassed enlightenment. Merely meditating on the sixteen aspects of impermanence, etc., abandons only ignorance with afflictions and manifests the state of an Arhat, which is the way to manifest inferior enlightenment. The way to refute these is not elaborated because it can be understood by the force of the teachings in the common context. In general, the common ground of the Vinaya and Abhidharma is considered to be divided into four types from the perspective of lineage. Jowo (Atisha) said: "The four emanations of Shravakas, and the transformation into complete enlightenment, and the holders of the doctrine of peaceful conduct." The first of these are Superior Friend, Rahula, and the irreversible, etc. In the Nirvana Sutra, Devadatta and the group of six are also included there. The second (288) is when a Shravaka, having attained forbearance on the path of preparation, transforms into a Buddha. The third is to enter as it is explained from one's own path. The fourth is when a Mahayana practitioner holds the doctrine of the Shravakas. Since it is included in the Hinayana, the Pratyekabuddha is not specifically mentioned in the root text, but only a brief mention of the topics. That doctrine has three divisions: the object of focus, the nature of the practice, and the result of the accomplishment. The first has three: lineage, view, and dependent origination. The first is: neither Shravaka nor Bodhisattva, but one who has become a person of middling faculties. The second is: although they do not accept the self of the person and external apprehended particles as atoms, they do not abandon the momentary consciousness of the grasper of falsely appearing objects. The Ornament for Clear Realization says: "In order to abandon the thought of the object of apprehension, and because the grasper is not abandoned, the path is like the coral of a support, it should be known as well-collected." So it is said. The third is: by meditating on the twelve links of dependent origination, such as ignorance, in forward and reverse order, the root of existence
