are the samadhi of the teachings. Those all arise from the combination of everything, or the wisdom arising from direct instruction and inference, or the wisdom arising from listening, thinking, and meditating. In these three ways, vipassanā is truly accomplished. The function is indicated by "afflictions" and so on. If someone asks, "What are the benefits of practicing wisdom?" The answer is: it can destroy all collections of afflictions, it can ascertain that cause and effect are infallible, it can truly understand the nature of phenomena and entities, that is, the reality of objects and mind, it can generate definite understanding from the depths of the heart about the qualities of the teacher and the teachings, all qualities depend on the virtuous friend, and for those with one-sided wisdom, the correct positioning of definitive and provisional statements resolves contradictions. Because the capacity of wisdom is great, there is no inconsistency, (260) it enables one to pass from the city of existence without sorrow. The six perfections, such as generosity, also become increasingly superior in order from top to top, and the perfection of wisdom pervades the remaining five perfections, and those that are pervaded also depend on this. As it is said in the Compendium: The five perfections and all the qualities of enlightenment, all of those depend on the perfection of wisdom. The teacher Āryadeva says: These visible and invisible qualities, the root of all is wisdom, therefore, in order to accomplish both, one should completely uphold wisdom. The teacher Vīra says: These merits of generosity and so on, with the protection of wisdom, will become even more powerful. Therefore, one must first rely on the benefits of listening, and the way in which this is done is also indicated by "also" and so on. That is to say, if the wisdom arising from listening, which is based on the ground of ordinary beings, is not diligently relied upon, then the qualities of thinking and meditating will not arise at all, and therefore one will wander in the wrong place. Therefore, the wisdom of listening is the cause of all the qualities of the grounds and paths, as the Omniscient One has said. As the teacher Vīra says: (261) One who has little listening is like a blind person, not knowing how to meditate. Without listening, what can one think about? Therefore, one should diligently listen, this is the cause. If one thinks properly, then vast meditative wisdom will arise. Lord Maitreya says: Wisdom is supreme, its basis is listening, therefore

Ra thos pa mchog, it is said. In the Compendium of Trainings, it says: One should seek hearing that can be endured. Then one should dwell in the forest. One should strive in meditative equipoise. Thus it is said. What is to be heard are the two dharmas of scripture and realization. That is also shown by how to ascertain what is to be measured by the measurer, by "what is to be measured," and so on. The dharma to be measured is the twelve branches of scripture, and the qualities of the five paths that it indicates, as appropriate, are measured by the three wisdoms. It is measured into two, direct and definitive, and four types of hidden intentions. That is also, the nature of all dharmas is suchness, and the door to liberation, emptiness, signlessness, and wishlessness, the three that abide, are the definitive meaning. Because one enters the path of mere appearance of conventional truths, having measured with discriminating consciousness, all dharmas are existent, this is this and that is that (262), whatever is fabricated is the direct path. Thus, with the two, what should one trust and not trust in direct and definitive? Thus, rely on the meaning, do not rely on the words; rely on wisdom, do not rely on discriminating consciousness; rely on the sutras of definitive meaning, do not rely on the sutras of direct meaning; rely on the nature of dharma, do not rely on the individual. In order to know those ways, that is the key to looking at the scriptures. In order to clarify the nature of those expressers, and in order to realize the intention of the expressed definitive meaning, intention and hiddenness are explained as two. Among them, first, for those with intention, the two, teaching and explanation, are explained, first being a little, and so on. Whatever is to be done, having set the goal, not according to the literal meaning, but slightly fabricating and explaining is also possible. That is also, for the objects to be tamed, temporarily telling the truth, not just for one purpose, but with special necessities, showing the four intentions. Second, explaining separately is shown by "equality" and so on. First, the intention of equality, also showing the contradictory as one, for the appearance of those who see this shore (263), the nature of samsara and nirvana, good and bad, and what to take and reject, exists in extreme contradiction, that is also, the reality of all dharmas, between the naturally pure, without one and different, is equality, the noble way of
