Abandoning one form of sexual misconduct, plus abandoning taking what is not given, possessing this one aspect, and further abandoning lying, this is almost considered guarding. On top of that, abandoning sexual misconduct arising from desire, this is two and a half of the root vows. If even alcohol is abandoned, one is considered a layperson who completely guards. The previous half vow, plus impure conduct, totals four root vows; if even alcohol is abandoned, it's five. This is known as a layperson who practices celibacy. Among the ten precepts of the monastic side, accepting gold and silver is permitted for laypersons to support their children (page 210). Dancing and garlands, because their faults are small, are counted as one, known as the eight-branch vows. Like Chandra Gomi, if one guards these vows constantly without interruption for as long as one lives, that is a true layperson. The novice monk's vows are: not killing, not stealing, not engaging in impure conduct, not lying, not drinking concocted alcohol, and so on, these five. On top of that, adding dancing and so on, wearing decorative garlands and so on, fortune-telling out of greed for others' merit, not during times of teaching the Dharma, a bed taller than one cubit, and from the seventh half of the nine parts of the night having passed until dawn appears, from then until half of the day has passed, not eating food at improper times, and not accepting gold and silver, these are holding the ten precepts, which are more excellent than the eight-branch vows. To enhance the power of intelligence, this is a rough summary, but elsewhere, as it is said: Four root vows, three killing root vows, unfounded slander, and five knowingly committed actions, mocking and honoring with leftover food, storing large amounts of fruit and covering (page 211) and alcohol, three dances, three garlands, a tall bed, improper times, jewels, three intermediate ones. Thus, there are thirty-three in total. Furthermore, abandoning the signs of a householder, taking the signs of a renunciate, the three actions of not being taken care of by a Khenpo, not being bound by monastic vows, but merely taking an intermediate renunciate status, this is a true taking and returning of vows. If one does not guard in this way, then even if one resolves to take the signs of a householder for a single day, it is said to be a cause for abandoning. In the Abhidharmakosha it says: The action of taking hold of intermediate power, meaning and life are fundamentally cut off. Bhikshu precepts.
