That is to say, the path of accumulation is further divided into small, medium, and large. The first is: the four close placements of mindfulness on body, feeling, mind, and phenomena; the impure, the painful, the impermanent, and the selfless; and (135) the four subsequent attainments of the eight similes of illusion. The function is to enter the four truths in order. The second is: unwholesome dharmas that have not arisen are not generated, and the continuum of those that have arisen is cut off; wholesome dharmas that have not arisen are generated, and those that have arisen are increased; cultivate the four right abandonments. The third is: the single-pointed samadhi of the union of tranquility and insight, accomplished by making the mind of meditation workable, therefore are the four legs of miraculous power, namely: the samadhi of aspiration, effort, mind, and conduct. The path of joining is the four: heat, peak, forbearance, and the highest dharma in the world. The commonality of the first two is: the five faculties of faith, effort, mindfulness, samadhi, and wisdom, cultivate these five. The characteristics are: deep belief, generating joy, entering the stream of realization, one-pointedness of mind, and knowing the nature, apply them in order. The latter two also transform the five mentioned earlier into powers, therefore they are called the five powers. Among them, the heat and peak positions are small because the time of arising the path of seeing is uncertain; forbearance (136) arises after the peak, so it is medium; at the time of the highest dharma in the world, it is connected to the path of seeing, so it is said to be large. The path of seeing is, as it says in the 'Friendly Letter': 'Mindfulness and excellent discrimination, diligence, joy, and pliancy, equanimity, these are the limbs of enlightenment.' What is said is the discipline of that path, the characteristics of each are: not forgetting the object, being skilled in distinguishing dharmas, being happy in diligence, generating joy in the object, body and mind being workable, the mind not deviating from one-pointedness, mind and mental factors abiding in reality, naturally accomplished. What is to be abandoned is: the afflictive obscuration of conceptual imputation and the two cognitive obscurations of coarse grasping and clinging will be abandoned, and the first ground of transcendental wisdom, the Joyful Ground, will be attained. In the path of cultivation, there are also categories of disciplines, as it says in the 'Friendly Letter': right view, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right samadhi, speech.
