La. For a person who serves without hypocrisy, with initial and respectful attitude, it is certain that countless glorious and virtuous qualities, which are manifestly high and definitely good, will fall like rain. (99) How should one serve? As indicated by the term 'patient' and so on: just as a patient treats a doctor, a guest treats an escort, a fearful person treats a helper, a merchant treats a guide, and a sailor treats a helmsman, one should seek refuge because one cannot withstand the fear of the enemies of birth, death, and affliction. As stated in the Ornament of the Tree: 'Son of lineage, you should generate the perception of a patient towards me, generate the perception of medicine towards the Dharma, generate the perception of nursing a disease towards diligent practice, and generate the perception of a skilled doctor towards a virtuous friend.' And so on. Examining the qualities of a disciple who is not a vessel: As indicated by 'to that' and so on, although the compassion and blessings of the noble lama have no partiality, whether one receives them depends on the disciple. Even if a lowly Dharma is taught, it is like being without a vessel, like a broken bottom that cannot hold anything, one cannot obtain the essence, which is the benefit of the Dharma. Why? (100) Because one is satisfied with just a little reward for the pith instructions that are like the heart, that is, one becomes happy. For such people, even if they pretend to have faith, it is like showing off the changes of the four seasons such as summer, and they are not trustworthy. In general, those with bad karma who possess all the omens of reversal, even if they initially explain the realization of cause and effect and diligently engage in it, they cannot enter the path of Dharma, just as a wild yak cannot be tamed. In the middle, let alone their own negligence in listening, contemplating, and meditating, they even hate others' efforts in practice as if they were enemies, and they pursue the desires of this life. Finally, they settle comfortably in the company of sinful friends, adopting their ways of behavior. Whatever the perverse outcome, they are like wild men living at the edge of the forest. If, by some coincidence, they happen to reside near a holy person, they are quick to flee to another place, unable to remain stable even for a moment, and as soon as they settle in the direction they go, they are completely seized by sin.
