Follow that person. The name of the one to be relied upon (91) is said to be "holy," and so on. In the past, perfect Buddhas and Bodhisattvas abiding on the bhumis, etc., who manifested obvious qualities, appeared. However, at this time, a spiritual friend who perfectly possesses all aspects of the holy Dharma is defiled by the power of the five degenerations, and is therefore difficult to find. As it is said in the "Request of Good Arms": "Those who possess all such qualities are extremely rare in times of strife. [One may find those] with half, a quarter, or an eighth of the qualities." Therefore, even if there are a few, they live in secrecy and are difficult to fathom. Even so, like the pure ground of the three vows, which are the basis of pure ethical conduct, [one should rely on a master who] has heard much, whose mind is thoroughly moistened by great compassion, who is skilled in the three baskets, and especially in the rituals of the ocean of outer and inner tantras, who has abandoned the obscurations of afflictions and knowledge, and is rich in the fruit of stainless wisdom of realization. By giving what is needed, speaking sweetly, acting in accordance with the meaning, and engaging in the benefit of those to be tamed, the four objects of gathering are adorned with the appearance of flowers. One should rely on a holy person who is especially diligent in gathering the bees of fortunate disciples who possess faith and commitment (92). Among these, the lama who teaches secret mantras is especially taught by the term "oral instructions," and so on. In particular, in order to easily understand the vast tantras and agamas that are difficult to fathom, the holy lama who teaches the essential oral instructions of the accomplished ones as they are, is matured by receiving the empowerment of the three profound benefits, abides properly in the vows, is extremely peaceful, has heard and understood the tantras that reveal the ground, path, and fruit, has completed the practice of recitation, and has perfected the signs of the outer, inner, and secret. With the wisdom of realizing selflessness, one's own mind is liberated. With immeasurable compassion, one is only concerned with the benefit of others through various activities. By abandoning the eight worldly concerns, one's actions are less pretentious, and one intently focuses on the Dharma in a vast environment. One is deeply disgusted with the suffering of existence, and encourages others to do the same. One is skilled in all means of accomplishing the benefit of oneself and others.

I, the Golden String lineage (93), rely on such a virtuous spiritual friend who is blessed because the vows are stained by defilements, and I will quickly attain common and supreme accomplishments. So it is said. Those who should not be relied upon are indicated by Brahmins, etc. Like a Brahmin, his behavior is on the uncle's side, and his lineage is on the father's side. He strictly protects the rules of both of them, or he is worried that the power of the residence, that is, temples, etc., will decline, and he is diligent in expanding the pond with worldly wealth. As a result, he has done a little listening and thinking, etc., so he enters a bath that is not a fruit position. For example, just as a wooden self-grinder cannot cut off any kind of fruit, he cannot practice in his own continuum, so how can he indicate the path of liberation to others' continuums? The nature of the noble ones is extremely contrary to that of ordinary people. How is it? Having faith, having discipline, having the steps of generosity, having much hearing, having shame, having embarrassment, and having wisdom, that is, being rich with the wealth of one's own lineage, and being free from miserliness and other defilements, (94) suffering, and all views, therefore they are called noble ones. The nature of childish ordinary people is: The teacher Matichitra said: You should not show off your talents in a place where there are fools and those who have broken vows, those who are dry and ungrateful for what they have done, those who are flattering, violent, and unbearable. Always know the differences between ordinary people, because they only follow their own interests, even more than other ordinary people. What is said is not contradictory, although the defilements have not been completely cut off, they fabricate that they are emanations of great compassion, and for the boundaries of what to take and leave, they close the eyes of wisdom, and with foolish blind faith and protecting their own side, they rashly establish the place of praise in such a state. Other unwise ordinary people also follow the superficial phenomena, and when they receive great offerings of gain and respect, they think, why can't I be like this? Therefore, they become arrogant and complacent, like a spiritual friend who is like a frog in a well, how can it be like a frog living in the sea being thrown into a well by a wave?
