Because of this, the mind becomes very impatient, like a cat. Such a pretender, in front of others, always walks slowly, with calm and restrained behavior, but cannot be trusted. If one dwells in a place where one is comfortable with companions who are inclined towards sinful deeds, even if there is a perfect refuge of liberation, one will turn away from it, and one's own image of practicing the Dharma will immediately decline and be destroyed. To explain the need to alternate residences, it is said, "Traveling" and so on. Because days and nights alternate, the traveling, light-footed sun and moon are intimate and friendly with all sentient beings. If one is familiar with all high and low people in one place and resides there for a long time, one will become bored because of mutual recognition, and suffer from mutual hatred. Therefore, one should be gentle with new places and people. It is natural for all people to become intimate and friendly. This is not only recorded in the Jataka tales, but is also evident in what one sees with one's own eyes. What kind of warrior wearing strong armor will not be trampled by circumstances? It is said, "The one with mind" and so on. Like this, the holy ones sometimes make some noise like ordinary people with consciousness, but their minds do not follow the good or bad of words with hope and fear, just like a rock, without any following thoughts. Therefore, a person with such behavior will not be swayed by external circumstances and will not break vows. In contrast, others will be changed by circumstances, it is said, "Purusha" and so on. Among them, "Purusha Brahma" means liberation from suffering. Practicing for that purpose is therefore a similar way of practicing. Whoever strives for the meaning of meditation with one-pointed concentration on Samadhi, no matter who, as long as the experience of practice has not yet become stable, will affect the quality of virtuous deeds depending on whether the environment and friends are in accordance with the Dharma. To explain what is the correct practice and what should be adopted or abandoned, it is said, "The teacher" and so on. Being able to truthfully point out what can be done and what cannot be done is what is permitted by the protector of the three realms. By virtue of this, one can accumulate merit for all other beings, and (89) one can also protect oneself through asceticism.

It is the nature of things that it does not degenerate, therefore, how those who beg, like a wish-fulfilling jewel, the only way of life that is in accordance with the sustenance of liberation is alms-begging alone. The five wrong livelihoods that are contrary to this are particularly impure, as it is said in the sutras, "livelihood" and so on. The extremely impure livelihood is: begging with the hope of giving, making a pitiful sound; or clearly having food and clothing, but hiding it and pretending to be poor, all that is obtained is stealing or begging by means. Giving a little food and drink, and striving to collect more in return, is seeking gain with gain. In order to obtain, praising oneself and proclaiming pure virtues, seeking with flattering words. Clearly not having any of the virtues of the three, Hearers, Bodhisattvas, and Mantras, but pretending to have them, this is called a hypocritical life; or saying "I have this patron," using this as an excuse, the patron only gave this much, but saying that for his sake, offerings and donations were sent to relatives, measuring the gains in this way, this is a wrong livelihood. Gaining benefits in these five ways is more severe than poison, it is a great cause of falling into the lower realms (90), therefore, as a practitioner, one should imitate the actions of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas of the past to the best of one's ability. Therefore, a good dwelling is a solitary place without the thorns of meditation; a good livelihood is relying on medicines, trees, flowers, etc. to extract essence, and begging, etc.; a good friend is someone who is in accordance with the Dharma; a good action is repeatedly striving on the path of hearing, thinking, and meditating, thereby generating courage in the direction of vast action. Up to here, the first turning of the wheel has been explained. In order to explain in detail the method of relying on a virtuous teacher, the contents of "learning" and so on have been proclaimed. In order to fully mature the qualities of all the places of learning on the path of liberation in one's own mindstream, it is necessary to rely on the virtuous teacher who possesses the characteristics described below, just as in the sandalwood forest of southern Malaya, no matter what ordinary trees wander, once they are熏染by the fragrance of the moist sandalwood branches, they will become like sandalwood, so that it is difficult to distinguish good from bad, similarly, relying on
