Like being imprisoned on an island filled with darkness, unable to see even the extension and contraction of one's own arms, one will attain the state of a great blind person. Thus it is said. To show the suffering of the Asuras (non-gods), it is said, "Gods," and so on. Due to jealousy of the gods' perfect wealth, they cut their own hearts like enemies, and once again set up a great battlefield of fierce armies. When they enter the battlefield, their own heads and limbs are cut off, and thus the Asuras are tormented by suffering. In the human state, there is the suffering of suffering, the suffering of change, and the suffering of conditioning, these three great fundamental sufferings. Birth, aging, sickness, death, encountering disliked enemies, separation from liked relatives, unfulfilled desires, and the occurrence of unwanted things, etc. Because the five aggregates of grasping hold the characteristic of suffering, one is always tormented by eight aspects. (68) To show the suffering of suffering, it is said, "Life," and so on. Life, that is, life that sways like a game of lightning or a water bubble. These people are trapped in the box of the eight sufferings just mentioned, and the surroundings are filled with discomfort and confusion, etc. Before the previous suffering has disappeared, the next suffering comes in turn, so taking on the latter is like applying a wound of phol to a leper, and one will be tormented. The suffering of change is, it is said, "Eminent," and so on. Here, in the pleasure garden of perfect eminent qualities, one longs for the taste of enjoyment. Like this, food mixed with poison causes harm, and in an instant the radiance of the body disappears, the gaze of the eyes droops, and one falls down like a ghost. This leisure body, which is obtained once like a magic trick, changes in an instant and is of an impermanent nature. To show the pervasive suffering of conditioning, it is said, "Sound," and so on. Even with an extremely comfortable, weary mind that cannot bear even the touch of the feet, riding on the neck of an elephant,

Because of the whipping, its (the elephant's) mind became extremely wild, and it ran, almost falling off a cliff. The swaying and lowering of the body symbolize the suffering of conditioned existence. Combining it with a Jataka tale: In the capital of the king named Radiant, King Rabga was eager to mount the neck of an elephant and said to the elephant trainer: 'Hey, be wise! This excellent elephant was obtained by us through the power of merit that cannot bear our feet touching the ground, so you must tame it.' The trainer replied, 'As you command.' So, he tamed the elephant until it obeyed the command to accept even a burning iron hammer with its nose without hesitation. After that, the king and two ministers rode on the elephant's neck and happily strolled near the countryside. However, for oneself, all the causes that lead to suffering are invisible because they are compounded. Those elephants, the supreme teacher tames their minds with the vows to subdue afflictions, and the trainer merely tames their bodies with iron hooks. Because of smelling the scent of a female elephant, the mind became extremely wild, to the point that the entire earth seemed like a spinning chariot wheel, creating an illusion. King Rabga was close to losing his life and suffering. Therefore, know that the suffering of conditioned existence is largely invisible to all sentient beings. Some foolishly say that this should not be the suffering of conditioned existence arising from the suffering of change, which is an unanalyzed, crude statement. The suffering of almost dying on a cliff destroys the previous happiness. If they think so, even just the touch of the feet on the ground is distressing because they crave happiness so much. So, at the time of wanting to ride an elephant, the cause of experiencing suffering—desire—is already latent there, and the nature of suffering already exists. If this is not suitable for the suffering of conditioned existence, then you refute, and I will refute. Know that the time for refutation has come, and reasons should be stated extensively. Thus, on top of the three great fundamental sufferings, the manner of the eight sufferings, such as birth, etc., is explained.
