It is so. Secondly, because there is no other binding (524) elsewhere, there is no need to rely on an antidote; like a drawing in water or a snake's knot, it is self-liberated and does not depend on conditions. Thirdly, the moment the seen object and eye consciousness nakedly touch, the elaboration of the appearance of form in oneself is cut off. Consciousness does not grasp the object, and appearance does not stain consciousness. Because it is liberated in the moment of appearance, it is free from reliance on antidotes and all other bases of liberation. Fourthly, it is not appropriate to apply the terms "one" and "many" to that meaning. Why? Because it is unborn, it is liberated from the extreme of existence. Because it is unceasing, it is liberated from the extreme of non-existence. Because it does not abide between the two, it is liberated from the extreme of the middle. Fifthly, in this way, because the characteristics of the basis of the nature of reality are not established, it is liberated into awareness as one. Although it is without characteristics, it is called the wisdom of a single thigle that emerges nakedly and thoroughly from the shell of the mental realm of the philosophical tenets established by the knowable and the knower, the wisdom of individual self-awareness. If one knows that the characteristics of the previous four also ultimately dissolve into one nature of individual self-awareness, then all phenomena of samsara and nirvana will become a vast expanse of liberation, and will be absorbed into emptiness. (525) This view, called awareness that transcends the mind of the habitual patterns of correct discrimination, is a special characteristic of the Great Perfection of intrinsic nature because it has not been proclaimed below. Those who have realized it are liberated into individual self-awareness, transcending the basis of non-indication, while sentient beings who have not realized it wander in samsara like sleep and dreams in that very nature. If distinguished by aspects, the alaya is like water, and sentient beings are like bubbles. If its nature is shown by way of example, then although mind and awareness seem the same at the time of non-discrimination during meditative equipoise, the distinguishing factor is that awareness is clear and unobstructed without intrinsic nature, while mind is swirling and deluded like a whirlpool. Again, awareness is like the moon in the empty sky, cut off from external objects, yet its clear radiance does not cease. Mind is like the fifteenth-day moon, mixed with objects, gradually mixing with the appearances of the six aggregates. It is clear without inside or outside, and free from beginning and end, so it is the quality of awareness without an object.

Indeed, it is so. The distinction of mind is that it is completely mixed with the six objects. Likewise, awareness is (526) the nature of the Dharmadhatu, the wisdom that has existed from the beginning and does not change. It does not rely on the method of subduing the mind in meditation, and it is free from sinking and agitation. Mind is the samadhi that focuses on any object of focus, and it is related to the dependent and the depended upon. Although awareness appears pervasively without upper, lower, or intermediate boundaries, it is not overwhelmed by the power of appearances, just as mercury falling on the ground is not stained by dust. Mind is that which possesses the aspects of grasper and grasped, and it is mixed with the aspect of closely associating with conceptual thoughts. Although awareness does not abandon mind itself to another place, because mind and awareness cannot coexist, the afflictions that manifest as the five objects and the clinging to them, which are of the same nature and essence, also become like fleeing together. Fleeing in this way will surely liberate one from the prison of afflictions and attain enlightenment, which is the special characteristic of the Mind Series. In other schools, the collection of afflictions is abandoned by the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, and subdued by Bodhisattvas through antidotes. Mantra generally transforms afflictions into the path, while the Great Perfection Mind Series believes in liberation in the nature of reality, and the Longchen Series believes that abandonment and antidote (527) become one in the nature of reality and are purified. In this school of the Mind Series, holding the self-nature of view in the expanse of non-conceptual awareness is truly amazing and wonderful! Thus it is said. The analogy of mind and awareness is like this: the Alaya and the Dharmakaya, although one in the realm of primordial purity, the Dharma that distinguishes them is that the Dharmakaya is like an ocean of non-discrimination, and the defilement of the Alaya is its obscuration. Just as a boat sails on the ocean, it floats in both samsara and nirvana. Although from that very basis, delusion and liberation are the same in nature, it is like falling asleep and waking up from sleep. That is to say, just as the basis of delusion of the six realms is weakened, and they are asleep in deep sleep, the liberated Buddha is like the state of awakening from sleep. Some who claim to be Great Perfection practitioners, considering the words "liberation on the basis" and so on, spoke of "initial" and so on. That is to say, the initial basis is neither definitely samsara nor nirvana.
