The thought arose that it was just like rolling up a mat and throwing it away from the heart. Upon seeing the face of the venerable Bodhi Master, appearing in various changing forms, tears flowed uncontrollably. I remembered the glorious King of Dharma of Oddiyana. Seeing his biography and practice places, I was reminded. Facing the southwest direction of the land of Rakshasas, I shed tears again and again. Thinking that whenever the time comes, I must do a virtuous deed that will directly lead me to the Copper-Colored Mountain of Glory (Padmasambhava's Pure Land) in the future, I vowed to practice diligently. In all the temples of the three ancestral masters, I made aspirations, following in the footsteps of Samantabhadra, with undeviating wishes, mindful of the perfect state in this life or the next. On a road in a village, it was said that a young lama, about eight years old, was being beaten by his teacher. His body was covered with marks of beating, completely naked, and he was alone bearing the burden of suffering. Seeing the young shepherd boys and girls comforting him and feeling compassion for him, I myself shed tears. Immeasurable compassion arose. When asked if he had parents, he said, "Both parents are dead." I lamented that an orphan was being treated like this, which is like the nature of samsara, a teacher showing suffering. I took off a good upper garment I had and gave it to him. Later, I taught (22) people how to communicate and then left. Entering the path of the Great Vehicle, generating the great Bodhicitta is the most important practice for the sons of the Buddhas. Before that, all the interdependent conditions for taming the mind with the four immeasurables were present. When I was twenty-eight years old, in the Fire Ox year, as the Great Miracle Festival was about to begin, on the island of Śrīparvata, I inscribed the vow of a three-year retreat in my heart and began to practice it. In order to prevent being hindered by various obstacles before realizing vast wisdom, I vowed not to leave my residence and crowds for seven years; because my residence was in a village, I could not avoid meeting many people and could not suppress the thoughts of attachment and aversion; not to bring outside words inside, nor to spread inside words outside.

Third, not to be impartial to anyone, whether close or distant. Fourth, not to rely on hungry ghosts as guests and sell merit as merchandise. Fifth, not to engage in labor unrelated to the ten practices of Dharma. Sixth, not to use wealth beyond what is needed for sustenance and waste it recklessly. Seventh, not to pursue the means of the four activities, but only to seek liberation. From the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra: The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas have unobstructed vision everywhere. In front of them, what state am I constantly in? Thinking thus, one should cultivate shame, respect, and fear. Thus, hold to it. Having held to it in this way, even if one spends a long time in recitations and austerities, if the mind is distracted, then, as the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra says, it is meaningless. If one does not know the chief of the Dharma, the secret of the mind, even if one wants to attain happiness and eliminate suffering, one will only wander aimlessly. Therefore, when will I properly guard my mind? I found awareness in this. Every day, even during the time of playing the hand drum, I would check whether I had wandered off the path, and every morning and evening I would observe and meditate. Unnecessary anger, aversion, renunciation, unfeigned faith, compassion for sentient beings, etc., even the initial qualities increased more and more. When various experiences of śamatha and vipaśyanā arose spontaneously, the great yogi Rikzhung Gomchen gave instructions on various spontaneous self-liberation meditation practices, which cleared away many temporary obstacles. This is very bad for beginners. In general, there is a world of difference between being aware of the uncorrected nature and recognizing arising feelings and states. I obtained the uncommon recognition of the ultimate view of Dzogchen and the knowledge of all the difficult points from the Seven Treasures. Even if the Six Ornaments and Two Supremes of Jambudvipa were to appear in person, if one cannot understand the intention of this great, irrefutable tenet, then even boasting to others is only being bound by karma. After about three months, I began to practice dissolving my body into the dharmadhātu, and...
