When going to the city of the four kāyas, one needs the heart essence that sustains the body and life force. Regarding the joys and sorrows of the outer phenomenal realm, if the inner grasping mind loses its way, even if one thinks one is practicing Dharma, it is just adding to suffering (134). Practitioners, bravely endure hardships! If you cannot tolerate even the slightest right or wrong of the actions of outer worldly people and the behavior of inner fellow practitioners, then high-sounding Dharma talk is just empty chatter. Practitioners, cultivate patience in your hearts! After saying this, all appearances changed. The best abandoned busyness and worldly affairs, vowing to flee to the Dharma and regard life as practice. The middling ones provided service for the three-year retreat, and even the lowest ones began to accumulate a hundred thousand preliminaries, and from one hundred thousand to one million guru yogas. They themselves also began a retreat practice, and the auspicious coincidence and special qualities of this were no different from what was before their eyes. From this time on, attachment to contrived virtuous actions naturally subsided. Since there was a way to rest the body comfortably, in order to dispel others' thoughts of being too relaxed, I prostrate to all the great perfection siddhas, such as the eight vidyādharas of India. With this view of space-like circumambulation, the net of doubt is cut in its own place. This is the view of effortless Atiyoga. Do not mistake it for nihilistic views. With this spontaneously arising, self-illuminating meditation, the contrived view and meditation are suppressed. This is the view of spontaneously accomplished Great Perfection. Do not mistake it for the memory of suppressing suffering. With this unattached, self-liberating conduct, adverse conditions and happiness and suffering are suppressed. This is the view of suppressing the three realms. Do not mistake it for the emptiness of virtue and the emptiness of sin. (135) With this fruit endowed with six special qualities, the dharmakāya with characteristics is suppressed. This is the view of the youthful vase body. Do not mistake it for falling into extremes. These four—view, meditation, conduct, and result—are the essence of all philosophical systems. If measured with conceptual thought, there will be many attachments. If one recognizes the emptiness of awareness like an echo, then all names are like a parrot's imitation. Saṃsāra and nirvāṇa are contradictory opposites, the magical display of delusion and liberation. If analyzed, they are like the palm and back of the hand. You who possess pure samaya, remember the great state of self-liberation.

Of the expanse. Let contrived virtuous actions vanish. By sleeping, ultimate aspirations are accomplished. This dharma-less one dwells at the peak of dharma practitioners. In the expanse of luminous sleep, clarity arises. Experiences and realizations are found within the bed. From the knots of the channels, liberation from the body's confines. Searching for the Buddha externally, and waiting on the stages and paths is utterly exhausting. In the expanse of the great union of emptiness and awareness, subdue the supreme ground of the wisdom guru. Ask all accomplished ones whether this is true or false. Engage in speech that empties samsara. Then, as the three-year retreat at Glorious Samye Chimpu neared completion, relying on poor living conditions, compounded by the influence of virulent wood-water, the remnants of negative karma accumulated over lifetimes, and the maturation of karmic debts ripened on my own body. In the back, the illness of pleurisy was like being struck by stones. In the front, the rays of blood-wind tormented like arrows and darts. On the legs, the swelling of edema was heavy as a mountain. All bodily essences were exhausted, weakened like a hundred-year-old ruin (136). Even the desire for food and dharma ceased, appetite was lost, physical strength waned, the buttocks trembled after three steps. If I were to die immediately now, from the depths of my heart, I would incline towards the biographies of the Kadampa masters, entrusting the hopes of my heart to dharma and religion, merely making a show of suppressing the four attachments. Because confidence in the nature of the Great Perfection has arisen, what doubt or fear could there be? Primarily, I worry about my aging mother, feeling compassion in my heart. Likewise, the hopes of the benefactors who sincerely trust me and the few faithful disciples have not been fulfilled. The service to the teachings through the three doors of hearing, thinking, and meditation, and the aspiration to greatly benefit sentient beings have not been realized, leaving regret in my heart. I repeatedly say, "Guru Rinpoche of Oddiyana, know me!" Even so, through the compassion of the ocean of root and lineage vidyadharas, without having to experience the burden of suffering from illness in my mind, on top of the illness, planting the seed of the great clarity of awareness-emptiness, all illnesses and clinging thoughts are completely absorbed into the vast expanse. Certainty in the instructions arises, and I am not disheartened by adverse circumstances. If one examines this in peaceful abiding, no matter what illness arises in the body or suffering in the mind, do not cling to the appropriation of the five aggregates.
