Protect. In general, the true nature of what is inherent exists on its own, but the two, abiding in that true nature and drifting into confusion, are different because of the force of habituation from eons to lifetimes, causing one's own face to be obscured by oneself. Therefore, the practitioner on the path of accumulation understands, the practitioner on the path of joining experiences, and the practitioner on the path of seeing realizes. Therefore, the lama with lineage and the teaching with qualified instructions are related to view, scripture, and reasoning. And, one's own realized meditation is related to experience. If these three, arising from that measure, are not contradictory (608), then that is the true nature of reality. A single fool follows after being led by the three kinds of wisdom, thinking that there is no need to train in the tantras and instructions. Saying that it will help to generate pride, they just try to fit something together haphazardly. Even for the Buddha Shakyamuni, they think he only has two kinds of knowledge and no qualities. All the great accomplished ones, such as the omniscient Longchenpa, have all taught the Dharma by observing their own knowledge and then measuring that meaning with whatever knowledge they had, thereby bringing forth the ability to teach. No one composes treatises with eloquence and boasting. As Rongpa Dzogchen said, those who in the degenerate age pretend to be great meditators abandon the tantras and instructions like enemies. They claim to have something deeper than that (609). They do not realize even a single key point of the unique view of Dzogchen. They spend their lives only in speculation and boasting. Now, completely, this natural state of present awareness, which is not defiled by any good or bad, is spontaneously present as the essence of the originally pure Kadag of Dzogchen. Except for the moment of liberation through hearing for a trained person, even if it is introduced to others, it will be defiled by the obscuration of knowledge, and it is impossible to have the effect of meditation, so it is necessary to advance more on the path of bliss, clarity, and non-thought. However, it would be good if one could truly realize that meaning, free from elaboration and without thought, from within the protection of the three experiences. You yourself should also be in a state of unwavering mindfulness right now, and if a thought suddenly arises and then you attain an inexpressible state, do not be quick to say that you have made a mistake. The continuity of mindfulness (610) and the recognition of the nature of thoughts have both experience and realization. Therefore, mindfulness is not an artificial mindfulness produced by effort, but rather a true, effortless, natural state.

The memory of the earth. Likewise, recognizing the self-arisen nature of thoughts is not a matter of conceptualizing with attachment, but rather like a crystal ball, clearly revealing the wisdom of insight. In short, the mind of meditation is without even a sesame seed's worth of clinging, and without a single moment of distraction. It is not augmented by lofty views, nor harmed by negative thoughts. When repeatedly practicing this mind that is free from fixed notions, meditation can be mastered by the practitioner. The Omniscient Longchenpa, inseparable from Samantabhadra, said: "Unfabricated, naturally liberated, profound and unsurpassed. Letting go of everything, directly seeing beyond the realm of thought. Like a newborn infant, natural, inseparable from the nature of reality. Primordially pure, free from all partiality. Rest your mind on the meaning of (611) unchanging in the four times. If there is hope and fear, clinging without letting go, then it is not the true meaning. No one can change it, it is free from a basis. Know that all aims and thoughts are primordially pure. The nature of reality, the original ground, spontaneously accomplished, without fabrication or error. Like the sky, pure, free from all partiality. Realizing this is the foundation of the path of yoga. Like impartial space, indivisible. The faults of non-realization all arise from grasping separately. Therefore, please know the equality beyond thought." In short, in the unique context of Dzogchen, this unfabricated, ordinary awareness is the essence of the Sugata. Since it is pure from the ground up and perfectly possesses all qualities, once this is realized, one will never allow the alaya-vijnana, the non-specified, the co-emergent ignorance, and (612) the conceptual ignorance of clinging to external objects of awareness to control even for a moment, but rather maintain the natural continuity, which is merely the name of meditation. If there is even a trace of intentional meditation in the mind, then there is only the possibility of going astray, making mistakes, and getting lost. The Omniscient One said: "On the original mind, adding an elaborate box, The more you decorate, the more you obscure the meaning of the essence. Therefore, let go of the box, reveal the appearance of foolishness, remain relaxed, Rest in the inconceivable vastness of the nature of reality." Thus understand. Furthermore, in order to eliminate the obstacle of meditation, such as the dullness of awareness and falling into some one-sided state, like the samadhi of absorption, casting awareness into space, mixing the emptiness of dharmadhatu with inexpressible awareness, exhaling impure air, inhaling pure air, and the three of bliss, clarity, and non-thought.
