In the moment of wisdom's flash, within the self-arising and self-liberating nature of awareness, without interruption and capable of perceiving, the very essence of consciousness itself, merely recognizing it is inexpressible emptiness. Abiding in this state of 'this is it' or 'this is not it,' there is nothing to meditate upon. This has been written in a pictorial form at Samtar. If the naturally abiding awareness has no way to be separated (558), then how does it abide during nighttime sleep? In the self-arising and self-liberating of thoughts, there is uninterrupted wonder. The reputation of self-arising and self-liberating is widely known among many great practitioners, therefore, there are many terms for this. Instantly recognize thoughts as soon as they arise. From the moment of recognition, do they abide in emptiness? Or do the recognizer and the thought, from the very beginning, arise inseparably and, without separation, liberate and go into emptiness? Or is the wise one who distinguishes subtle differences between arising and not arising absent, and in the ordinary state of self-awareness, in the state of vast, unobstructed awareness, does one abide in a state beyond words? Please explain its way of abiding. Originally, there is nothing to cultivate in meditation; the natural flow of inherent awareness should be so. However, the obscurations of the three roots (559) obscure the true face of reality. Originally, if mind and awareness are not distinguished, and if the clinging to meditating on emptiness and clarity is not broken, then it is not the original purity of Dzogchen. Whether it is or not, it is written in the Treasury of the Supreme Vehicle. The appearances of the degenerate age are laughable. The distinctions between experience and realization should not be made into opportunities. When reciting mantras continuously, many carry the inflated emptiness of 'A-thas' (ཨ་འཐས་). Why is that? It is said in the 'Dro Thig' (གྲོལ་ཐིག་, Liberation Drop): 'The first of the self-liberation of memory in the drop' (དྲན་པ་རང་གྲོལ་ཐིག་ལེའི་དང་༔), 'In the environment of vast, expansive space' (ཁྱབ་གདལ་ནམ་མཁའི་ཁོར་ཡུག་ལ༔), 'Memory has neither grasping nor non-grasping' (དྲན་པས་བཟུང་དང་མ་བཟུང་མེད།), 'Confess the bondage of memory's chains' (དྲན་པས་སྒྲོག་གིས་བཅིངས་པ་བཤགས༔), thus the intention of Kunsang Yegrol (ཀུན་བཟང་ཡེ་གྲོལ་, Samantabhadra's Primordial Liberation) has been explained. You, in the self-arising and self-liberating of thoughts, constantly without interruption and in the moment of wisdom's flash, sometimes find the words of difficult sustained meditation (560). Considering the differences in meaning between the beginning and the end, in the diagram of deceptive questioning, I have dispelled doubts with a little hearing, understood the key points by contemplating the truth of the meaning, and seen the truth by meditating without interruption. In such a way, there is no discouragement, fear, or anxiety. If you still desire the stainless experience of hearing, thinking, and meditating, then be satisfied with elaboration. The fruition of focusing solely on emptiness, all thoughts arise dependently.

Regarding the specific questions arising from dependent origination, how is it that the mind is the practitioner in the hermitage of the body? It is to show that one is not distracted by the activities of the alaya consciousness, the eight consciousnesses, and various thoughts, but rather that awareness is spontaneously liberated, whether present or absent. This is why that term is established. The reason is that even if one is in the hermitage of the body, if one does not grasp the root of clear light (561) awareness, the various thoughts of the mind will wander to external objects, becoming meaningless, like being imprisoned in a dark prison. Furthermore, some say that paintings or sculptures without mind are labeled as "mind." Because the deity is blessed by proper consecration, it can be called "mind," although there are no gross thoughts that distinguish between white and red appearances. However, it is far superior to the realm of sentient beings, possessing non-conceptual wisdom and great compassion, and has the immeasurable ability to appear to those to be tamed. Taking the three great monasteries of Tibet as examples, from the special Three Jewels of reliance, one can know that wisdom is integrated into the white, increasing form body. Furthermore, someone asks, regarding practice (562), what is the benefit of deliberately doing something when there is clearly no practice of the action lineage? This is because they do not understand the principle of becoming accustomed to abiding in the state of the nature of reality and integrating it into one's own nature. Because the obscurations of afflictions and ignorance are removed, one can maintain stable awareness in that state. Accumulating merit through conditioned virtuous actions, training skills through non-self-existence, and so on, are all possible. As the Great Orgyen said, "Although there is no practice, there is training and accomplishment." Regarding the preliminaries, taking refuge as an example, one must first establish the field of refuge, which possesses immeasurable qualities of wisdom, compassion, and power. Then, the one to be protected must have the appearance of an ordinary being, fear the suffering of samsara, (563) have compassion for sentient beings, and have faith in the qualities of the Three Jewels. Through these three, one takes refuge. Finally, placing the protector and the protected in a state of non-duality is the true refuge that abides in the nature of reality and is not deceptive. If one does not understand this principle and thinks from the beginning that there is no protector and no protected, then one becomes a Samkhya heretic.
