It is sufficient to consult someone with the wisdom of the Lama's view. Generally, the boundary between realization and non-realization is only like the palm and back of the hand, so knowing oneself is called meditation, and not knowing is called delusion. There is no difference in how thoughts arise for practitioners and worldly people, but there is a difference in whether or not one influences those thoughts. Worldly people influence whatever arises in their minds, thinking, "If I do this, it will succeed; if I don't do this, it won't succeed; I must do this for this; if I do that first, then this will come later." These thoughts accumulate in their hearts, they speak them out, and they act on them, so in the state of attachment, hatred, and ignorance, delusion continues like a string of beads. Their ingrained habits become deeply ingrained, so they wander endlessly in samsara. However, practitioners cut off the root of whatever arises (538) at its source. They release awareness into the unpredicted expanse. By practicing this present, naked awareness, uncorrupted by any good or bad, when realization merges into the expanse, one reaches the state of liberation from suffering. To strive for such a goal, one emerges from the crowd of worldly people, entrusts one's mind to the Lama and the Three Jewels, and does not listen to the words of others. One takes control of oneself and looks to the biographies of previous accomplished ones. When misfortune and obstacles occur, one thinks of them as firewood for burning away obscurations, and one cultivates joy, thinking that negative karma is खत्म (Tibetan, Devanagari Sanskrit, Romanized Sanskrit, Literal Chinese meaning). One does not become too attached to whatever food and clothing arises, and one does not abandon the Dharma for the sake of livelihood. Even when happiness and joy occur, one understands that they are not permanent and are like last night's dream, so one trains in the illusory nature of desirable objects. With such manliness, one establishes a life-fortress of practice (539) in cliffs and snow, perseveres in the biographies of previous accomplished ones, and even if the perception of birth and death is not completely exhausted, one will certainly have no regrets at the time of death. This is the meaning of practicing the Dharma. These are the words of the self-arisen Padmasambhava, given from the secluded retreat of the self-arisen bird's nest of the Great Power Palace of Oddiyana, to the Vidyadhara Lhundrup, the emanation of Khyentse Özer, the yogi. May it be virtuous! In the unmade, still, vast, spontaneous expanse, in the non-duality of samsara and nirvana, beyond effort and mind, in the nature of awareness beyond view, meditation, and action, I prostrate without acceptance or rejection! The way to settle the mind is to rest in the present, ordinary awareness.

Unadorned and uncorrupted, clear and naked awareness. (540) This is what cannot be expressed in words. Meditate by maintaining these two without forgetting them at all times. Forgetting this is without meditation. Not forgetting it is having meditation. The ultimate resting point and grasp is this, as said by the Omniscient One: Even if you recognize your own face, if you do not familiarize yourself with it, it is like a young child carried away by the enemy on the battlefield. Therefore, any meditation state beyond this, whether it is pleasant and joyful, or attached to clarity, or incomprehensible darkness, etc., does not go beyond straying and losing the way. Meditate in the same way. Let the mind abide. All the definite knowledge that thinks, "This is it," is just the husk of the mind, as a continuation of the previous reason. Even if meditation is prolonged, if attachment is not eliminated, (541) it is like meaningless effort, a lineage cut off, and fame and gain. Therefore, if this present awareness, free from fabrication, corruption, thought, and expression, is skillfully remembered at all times, it is called meditation, it is called awareness, it is called primordial purity. If this is not remembered, it is called delusion, it is called ignorance, it is called mind. Samsara and nirvana are nothing other than awareness and non-awareness. In this way, when meditating, if disturbed by the buzzing of thoughts, the thoughts themselves are not beyond meditation, so if the thought itself recognizes itself, it is called the arising of thought as meditation. However, it is very difficult to distinguish the boundary between distraction and non-distraction at the beginning, so do not transform thoughts into the path from the beginning. Instead, look at whatever arises and do not analyze or contemplate it at all, but let awareness naturally take hold. (542) Once stability is gained in this, thoughts will arise clearly from the beginning. At that time, the skill of insight will arise, so there is no separation between abiding and moving, and do not intentionally observe and expand as before, but cultivate it without grasping and openly. In this way, the common realization of the union of shamatha and vipashyana is shown, as well as the concluding words for eliminating obstacles and increasing merit. Alas, the time of death is uncertain, like lightning in the sky. Enemies and friends are uncertain, like autumn clouds. Assembly is impermanent, like guests in a market. Do not grasp impermanence as permanence, practice the sublime Dharma. The fame, gain, food, wealth, and enjoyment of this life are of no benefit other than deception.
