If there are signs of being born in hell, in order to prevent falling into hell, at the moment of cessation of breath, the consciousness is clearly settled in the heart, reciting "A" (Tibetan: ཨ, Sanskrit Devanagari: अ, Sanskrit Romanization: a, Chinese literal meaning: A), while visualizing the five lights melting like fire, merging with one's own mind, and abiding in this. If the guide has supreme realization, then his consciousness naturally exists in the clear light, and because the truth of Dharma nature is encountered, there will be a special key to liberation, which is the characteristic of this King of Vehicles. At these times, just like a king sitting on the throne and a minister moving a cannonball, all the blood in the body gathers into the life force. The blood drips three times, and the breath also stops exhaling in three stages of varying lengths. The breath merges into consciousness, and for a moment, consciousness faints in the center of the heart, losing consciousness, which is the time of cessation of internal breathing. In "Vast Expanse of Luminosity" it says: After that, the blood of the body gathers, and drips in the life force. The mouth and eyes turn gray, and the breath stops about an elbow's length. After that, the second drop of blood drips, the head bends, and the breath stops an arrow's length. After that, the third drop of blood drips, there is a hiccup, and the breath stops a fathom's length. After that, exhaling stops, and consciousness faints and abides in the center of the heart. After that, internal breathing stops, and the Bardo of Dharma nature arises. Third, the Bardo of Dharma nature is: Because the basis of clinging to the aggregates is lost, the clear light of self-appearance manifests. At that time, one needs the instruction of trusting one's own appearance, like a child entering its mother's lap, that is, having confidence in self-appearance. For example, not only is the mother-child relationship very close, but also due to the influence of karma, even if just born as an animal, it will unhesitatingly enter its own mother's embrace from among many. The ground of awareness, the essence of original purity (Tibetan: ཀ་དག, Sanskrit Devanagari: आदि, Sanskrit Romanization: ādi, Chinese literal meaning: Primordial Purity) exists like a mother, and is realized through Trekchö. From that, the manifestation of the power that arises as the ground appearance, like a child, is familiarized through Tögal. The essence and self-power in the Bardo, like the sun and rays, naturally and surely are not other than self-appearance, just like a child entering its mother's lap, and in the moment of distinguishing, the Bardo naturally disappears, thereby attaining Buddhahood. For this, there is this special secret path, that is, after all the stages of absorption bound by substantial clinging are completed,

At the moment when the mind is separated from consciousness, the alaya consciousness, without memory or rememberer, is described as dissolving into space. In reality, at that instant of dissolving into the Dharmadhatu, the self-luminous nature is like a clear sky without clouds. It neither falls into India nor into any direction, appearing as empty and clear, free from obscurations. () If one can recognize this and remain in the natural state without any adjustments, it is called the great basis of primordial liberation. From the basis of delusion, distinguished by six characteristics, liberation is forcibly attained in the great inner space of primordial purity. Regarding this, the Omniscient One said: In the ocean of profound meaning, the place of liberation shown when dissolving into the luminous space is arranged in connection with the words following "the first instant." The reason for this can be understood through the oral instructions in the exhaustive examination of the key points, as well as through the Lamp of Essential Practice and so on. In general, for explanations that are extensive or concise, and for explanations that are hidden or concealed, things bound by six limits and four modes do not allow the knowledge of direct appearance to enter. Even if one wants to apply scriptural connections and subtle points of wisdom, since this is a text of oral instructions, from the perspective of relying on meaning, one should avoid excessive words. If there is no liberation, () it is called dissolving into the luminous space. As stated in the "Union of Sun and Moon Sutra": The consciousness of beings dissolves into the light. When the breath ceases to travel in and out, the appearance of things as objects from the parts of one's senses does not exist, but a consciousness of thinking they exist arises. The substantial body does not appear, but appears as a body of light. At that time, the extent of what can be experienced appears as a mandala of five lights. It is said that at that time, without a change in time, appearances change, and the appearances of the external earth, stones, mountains, rocks, plants, forests, sun, moon, and all sentient and insentient things disappear. Wherever one looks, it is like opening a silk brocade, or like looking at sunlight with eyes covered by thin cloth. All appearances are extremely bright, with various colors, without inside or outside, narrowness, having a moving form, and extremely radiant. For those who are now accustomed to Tögal (), it will appear that there is an opportunity for liberation, but for those who are not accustomed, they will only see a glimpse of a shooting star.
