May the protection and prayers of all beings be fulfilled as desired, may they never be separated from the light of the Three Jewels, may they remember their lifetimes, may they be happy in this life and the next, and may they ultimately attain the state of complete Buddhahood, etc., with immeasurable benefits. Incidentally, in order to keep the vows of refuge in the lineage, here is a brief summary of the nature of the precepts: Having taken refuge in the Buddha, one should not rely on worldly deities and kings who are difficult to depend on (912) and who inflict harm, as protectors and refuge in samsara. One should not be disrespectful even to broken pieces of Buddha images. Having taken refuge in the Dharma, one should abandon the thought of harming sentient beings even in dreams, and one should generate respect even for pieces of paper with writing on them. Having taken refuge in the Sangha, one should not associate with people who have wrong views and conduct, who possess materialistic views, and one should not step on yellow cloths. In short, in this supreme secret vehicle, the main object of refuge is the Lama. The Lama's mind is the Buddha, the Lama's speech is the Dharma, and the Lama's body is the Sangha. If one denigrates the Lama, it is equivalent to abandoning all objects of refuge. The key to refuge is the foundation of all Dharmas, so one should practice it diligently. Secondly, the instructions on generating Bodhicitta, the root of the Great Vehicle, are threefold: training the mind with the four immeasurables, generating Bodhicitta, and upholding the vows of aspiration and engagement. First, within the first part, meditating on equanimity: Om! What's going on? In the present situation, one is very attached to one's own side, such as parents and relatives, and one harbors hatred towards enemies and their side, which is not good. This is also a fault of not having examined things properly. Like this, in previous lives, enemies have been relatives, and relatives have been enemies, there is no doubt about that. Even now, even if one treats enemies as enemies, there is no certainty that they will definitely be able to harm oneself. If one knows how to adapt, they may even be beneficial like relatives. Even if they are relatives, like sons deceiving their parents, they collude with opponents, take their side, steal wealth, quarrel, fight, etc., which are all obvious. Even if they seem to be very close, once they become displeased, they will cause suffering to oneself, destroy temporary happiness, and ultimately become a great obstacle to virtue, throwing oneself into the lower realms.

What then would become an enemy? In the future (914), enemies will surely turn into friends and friends into enemies, there is no denying that. Therefore, starting with one or two sentient beings, carefully examine everywhere, and practice equanimity, which is free from attachment and aversion, and without an object of focus. Then, cultivate loving-kindness: consider all sentient beings as the object, just as parents cherish and tolerate their young children, with a strong desire to connect those sentient beings with happiness and auspiciousness, cultivate loving-kindness, and strive to think of how to benefit them. Then, cultivate compassion: imagine a criminal imprisoned in a dungeon, about to be executed, or a sentient being tormented by intense suffering, like a livestock animal awaiting death in a slaughterhouse. Generate the perception of a mother's love for her child towards them, thinking how wonderful it would be if they could be freed from this suffering immediately, cultivate unbearable compassion, and recite (Tibetan: འུྃ༔, Sanskrit Devanagari: हूं, Sanskrit Romanization: hūṃ, Literal Chinese meaning: 嗡). Then, successively meditate on other lower realms, and all the actions that cause rebirth in those realms, and finally rest in a state without an object of focus. Then is joy: imagine someone in the heavenly realms who is happy, blissful, long-lived, with many attendants, and possessing wealth, without jealousy or comparison, but wishing that they could attain even greater glory, have eternal life, greater wisdom, and so on. Thinking how happy I would be if other sentient beings could also attain such a state. Especially for those who harm oneself, and those who cause jealousy in one's mind, uproot the evil thought of being unable to bear the achievements and perfections of others, cultivate a special joy for all things that are conducive to happiness, and finally rest in a state without an object of focus (916). Secondly, actually generating Bodhicitta, in terms of the difference in wisdom, first liberating oneself, and then wishing to place other beings in that state as well, this is the Bodhicitta like a merchant leader; wishing to liberate oneself and all sentient beings together, this is the Bodhicitta like a shepherd; not desiring to attain liberation oneself until all sentient beings have attained enlightenment.
