Because of constantly associating oneself with suffering, one should contemplate well that no matter where one is born in the three realms and six classes of beings (894), there is only suffering. If I do not strive now for a way to be liberated from samsara, I am truly foolish; I must make a firm resolution and dedicate the merit. Fourth, contemplate the law of karma. Thus, samsara arises from karma, and is created by the fruits of karma. Therefore, there is no other creator for going to the realms of gods and the evil destinies, nor is it accidental. So in all circumstances, examine the cause and effect of virtue and non-virtue, abandon the side of non-virtue, and strive to accomplish the side of virtue. Among these, the first of the ten non-virtuous actions to be abandoned, the three actions of the body, is killing: From the motivation, relying on hatred, one will fall into hell; relying on desire, one will fall into the hungry ghosts; relying on ignorance, one will fall into the animal realm. This is the result of maturation, and it is the same for all the following. Experiencing (895) the result similar to the cause, even if one attains the heavens, one will have a short life and many illnesses. The dominant result matures in the land, being born in a place where the land is barren and unpleasant, with enemies and cliffs, and other things harmful to life. The result similar to the cause of taking what is not given (stealing) is poverty of resources, and even if one gains a little, one must share it with others. The dominant result is that crops are damaged by hail and frost, trees do not bear fruit, and one is born in a place where there is famine. Nowadays, taking things secretly is called stealing, but the greatest fault is stealing the property of the Three Jewels, as well as seizing things by force, and acquiring things through deception in business and weighing. Many people do not think about this at all, but one should understand that the meaning of taking what is not given is completely included, and one should know that this is only a difference in the act of stealing. Adultery (896) is: The greatest fault is being the cause for others to break their vows, as well as ejaculating oneself, being owned by others, having paid the reward, even if one is in control, during the day, during fasting, being sick, being pregnant, being oppressed by sorrow, during menstruation, not having recovered from illness, going to a place where there is a support of the Three Jewels, being protected by parents and relatives, not

Engaging in sexual misconduct with mature young women, and through the mouth and excretory passages, experiencing various forms of improper sexual conduct according to place, time, and circumstances. The result concordant with the cause of these experiences is that the household is not harmonious and is lax, and enemies arise. The dominating result is having to live in undesirable places with foul odors, such as urine, feces, and filth. Second, among the four types of verbal misconduct (897), lying is: saying anything untrue with the intention of deceiving others. In particular, claiming to have attained realizations when one has not, or claiming to have clairvoyance when one does not, and specifically, slandering the Buddha. The result concordant with the cause of this is being frequently slandered oneself and being deceived by others. The dominating result is that wealth is unstable and one constantly encounters frightening and fearful situations. Slander is: all actions that cause disharmony among others with the intention of creating discord, especially causing division within the Sangha. The result concordant with the cause of this is that one's retinue is not harmonious, and adversaries arise. The dominating result is having to live in difficult-to-traverse places, such as steep valleys and cliffs. Harsh speech is exemplified by openly proclaiming the faults of someone who is unattractive (898). In short, all words that prick the hearts of others like thorns, especially speaking unpleasant words to noble beings. The result concordant with the cause of this is always hearing unpleasant sounds, and one's own speech also turns into quarrelsome words. The dominating result is having to live in unpleasant places, such as stony and thorny areas. Idle talk is: thinking that non-Dharma, such as Brahmanical secret mantras, is Dharma, and being distracted by prostitutes' talk and songs of attachment, and words of desire and hatred, such as those about war and thieves. The result concordant with the cause of this is that one's own words are not dignified and lack confidence. The dominating result is that even if one farms, there is no harvest, and the seasons are reversed and unstable. Thus, the seven actions of body and speech (899) are forms with visible and tangible characteristics. Therefore, their power is perfected only when the four factors of basis, intention, action, and ultimate completion are complete. Third, mind...
