Think of the suffering as being magnified sevenfold by the coarseness of the sevenfold sensation. Just as one recoils from going to a place where great misfortune has occurred, one should strive not to be born there, and meditate in this way. Its environs are: the sixteen surrounding hells of Avīci. In each of the four directions, there are: a pit of embers, a swamp of corpses, a plain of weapons, and a forest of sword leaves. Among them, the pit of fire (879) is: those who have exhausted some of the karma of Avīci Hell emerge and, delighting in the pit of dark shadows, go there, only to fall into the burning fire of unextinguished embers, where their flesh and bones are burned. Similarly, upon seeing a river and going towards it, they fall into the stinking swamp of corpses, where they are pierced by worms with sharp iron beaks. The plain of weapons is: upon seeing a delightful plain and going towards it, the entire plain turns into sharp iron skewers, and wherever they place their feet, they are pierced and turned to ash, and when they lift their feet, it heals, causing suffering. Upon seeing a forest of leaves and happily going towards it, all the leaves turn into swords, and the rain of swords moved by the wind cuts the body into pieces. Furthermore, there is what is called the Iron Shalmali Tree. Upon seeing beings calling out to them from the top of the mountain, beings they are fond of and attached to, they go towards it. On the way, their feet are pierced by sharp iron (880) skewers, and when they reach the top, crows and vultures peck at their brains and eye fat. When they see a way down and try to descend, they are pierced as before. When they reach the top, iron men and women turn into burning flames and embrace them, burning and devouring them. Then, contemplate the eight cold hells: In general: amidst snow mountains and hailstones, in a place where the ground is not even visible enough to place a foot, and where only blizzards lash the body. Naked, the body is extremely vulnerable to the cold, and blisters suddenly appear, hence the Blister Hell. When the blisters burst from rubbing against stones, it is called the Burst Blister Hell. Because of the unbearable stinging pain, they gnash their teeth, causing them to chatter, hence the Chattering Teeth Hell. They constantly utter cries of lamentation, hence the Achuchu Hell. Their voices crack, and they emit long howls, hence the Huhu Hell. Their skin cracks into four pieces, cracking like an উৎপལ་ (Tibetan, Devanagari: utpala, Romanized: utpala, meaning: blue lotus). Cracking into eight (881) pieces, cracking like a lotus.

Sixteen and thirty-two, and so on, splitting open countless times, splitting open greatly like a lotus. Inside these splits, sharp-beaked creatures enter and eat, experiencing unbearable suffering due to the cold. These eight experiences form the suffering of eight names, to be remembered in the mind as before. Then, the temporary sufferings are: being squeezed between rocks, being wrapped inside stones, being frozen stiff inside ice, being boiled in hot springs, being burned in fire, and the suffering caused by cutting down trees, manifesting as attachment to one's own feelings, experiencing the suffering of limbs being severed. Mortars, brooms, spindles, doors, winnowing baskets, pillars, stoves, vehicles, and so on, for things that are always used and enjoyed, the unbearable suffering of perceiving them as tangible objects (882). In iron houses, suffering during the day, and the opposite at night, killing each other, etc., for the different ways of experiencing suffering, one should remember them in the mind and generate renunciation. Then, the suffering of the pretas (hungry ghosts), divided into those who dwell in the abyss and those who wander in the sky. Of those who dwell in the abyss, there are three, the common one being that there is no flesh between the skin and bones, so they are withered and emaciated, and for many years they do not even hear the sound of food and drink, let alone experience it. The external obstacles are the four inversions, such as the reversal of hot and cold, and seeing rivers and fruits, etc., wanting to approach them but immediately disappearing, feeling frustrated and displeased in the place of disappearance, appearing in desolate wilderness, or being guarded by people carrying weapons, suffering beatings and insults. The internal obstacle is that the mouth is only the size of a needle's eye (883), even if one drinks the water of the ocean, the throat cannot contain it, the throat is dry from thirst, the stomach is as large as a region, and the tiny limbs cannot support it. Even if one obtains a little food, it turns into burning gravel and falls down, so that fire burns from the heart and lungs all night, and smoke billows from the nose, so it is called the obstacle of food and drink. The doorway obstacle is that many creatures parasitize the body of each preta, eating from inside the body. In short, even if they meet each other, they beat and
