The characteristics are: In the "Ratna Churning Sutra," Maitreya (791) asked: How should one rely on a virtuous spiritual friend? The answer is: A virtuous spiritual friend is one who, in all the teachings they impart, focuses solely on the ultimate truth of the Dharma realm and elucidates it, guiding others from the straight path. Based on this, as stated in the "Ornament of the Sutras," one should rely on a virtuous spiritual friend who has tamed their mind well with the three higher trainings, not just partially, but with extensive learning, possessing the qualities of scriptural transmission; who has the wisdom to realize suchness, surpassing the qualities of their students; who has the power of discernment to analyze the meaning of the scriptures, pleasing the ears of those to be tamed and skillfully leading them to the ultimate path; who does not seek gain or respect, but has compassion for the vulnerable; who has tireless diligence in accomplishing the welfare of others; (792) who is never weary of teaching repeatedly, and who has the fortitude to endure false accusations. Such a qualified guru should be relied upon. If further divided, as stated in the "General Collection of Intentions Sutra": the outer guru who is skilled in cutting off superimpositions, the inner kind guru who reveals the secret mantra instructions, the secret root guru who points out the unborn nature of mind, the root guru of the basis of self-nature, the guru of pure self-mind, the guru of symbolic appearances, and the guru who embodies the lineage of individuals. Incidentally, regarding the characteristics of a disciple, the "Continuum of Clear Space" states: A disciple who lacks the vessel is: of little wisdom, fond of gossip, and a people-pleaser; eloquent but cunning and deceitful; breaks the guru's words and jokes with their kindness; does not see qualities but finds fault; has a bad lineage and nature; despises kindness and praises themselves; seeks fame and fortune and breaks vows; does not examine disciples, the guru is an enemy. As it says, with examination preceding, the qualified guru to be relied upon is: (793) In the "Continuum of Light: Self-Arisen Awareness" it says: having the power of faith and diligence; great wisdom and no attachment; possessing great compassion and practicing secret mantras; the mind without thought is without distraction; possessing vows and diligent in practice. Only these, and not others. Such a union of guru and disciple

Just as a bird with two wings flies effortlessly in the sky, achieving Bodhi is not that difficult. Therefore, students should rely on a qualified lama, and also try to avoid faults that contradict the scriptures. Once the object of reliance has been determined and the mind has been subdued with antidotes, there are two ways to rely on a spiritual friend: relying with intention and relying with action. The former is as stated in the Ratnamegha Sutra, one must first generate such faith: "It protects all merits and makes them grow, it eliminates doubts and liberates from all rivers, faith is the symbol of the city of happiness and well-being, faith is without turbidity and purifies the mind, abandoning arrogance is the root of respect, faith is the best of wealth, treasures, and feet, like a hand, it is the root of accumulating virtue." Thus, for the virtuous friend, it is not just superficial interaction, but to generate unwavering faith from the depths of the heart, like the noble Always Bodhisattva Dharmavardhana seeing merits. Because our karmic obscurations are not purified, even a qualified lama may show various actions in four ways (straightforward, definite, concealed, intentional), so that we cannot understand their true intention, and may confuse merits and faults. At this time, the thought of fault must be stopped. If it can be stopped, then everything seen is good, or it can be done by the power of vows. Therefore, for all the seemingly faulty actions of the lama, special efforts must be made to counteract and clarify them. The lama's actions (795), good or bad, the main points and methods of speech, even the details of clothing and dressing, once the thought of "this is not good" arises, immediately stop this thought, do not follow self-grasping. For beings with heavy karma like me, such faults cannot exist for such a special lama. This is just a manifestation of the habitual afflictions and karmic forces from beginningless time. What is the difference between an old woman who ate peaches seeing hair falling from the sky, and a person suffering from jaundice seeing white conch shells as yellow? We beings whose hearts are pierced by the five arrows of desire always speculate about wise people according to our own behavior.
