Liberation from samsara depends solely on one's own diligence. For example, when one is intoxicated by sleep, no one can purify the dream. If it were not so, then the compassionate Buddhas, with just one ray of compassion, would have certainly emptied this immeasurable existence from its very beginning. Therefore, we are sunk in the mire of samsara, bound by the tight chains of grasping, and pierced by the arrows of affliction. Having no choice but to endure present suffering and invite future suffering, after careful consideration, generate immeasurable compassion for all sentient beings in the six realms. To lead all these beings to the path of liberation, from this day forward, offer to the Three Jewels, the source of all qualities, in various ways, and with strong antidotes, restrain (787) unwholesome thoughts in every moment, and engage in confession and vows. As stated in the Vinaya Sutra: "Even small sins should not be despised, thinking they are harmless. Even tiny sparks of fire can burn down a pile of grass as big as a mountain." Therefore, accumulate even the smallest good thoughts, and spend time solely with white, virtuous deeds. Some say they are too ignorant to study and contemplate; some say they are too poor to make contaminated material offerings; some say they are too old to practice the Dharma, and so on. Saying this is mainly because of a lack of mental strength. If one generates diligence and courage, it is said that even animals can achieve liberation, let alone humans. Shantideva said: "How can I attain enlightenment? One should not be discouraged. Because the Tathagata speaks truthfully, he has spoken this truth. (788) Bees, flies, mosquitoes, and any insects, if they generate the power of diligence, can obtain the supreme enlightenment that is difficult to obtain. I am born as a human being, able to distinguish between benefit and harm, if I do not abandon the practice of enlightenment, why can't I attain enlightenment?" Furthermore, as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: "If sentient beings are born as humans, they can attain perfect enlightenment in every moment, therefore, one should not accept discouragement."

reason. Furthermore, one should not limit or strictly divide any number of virtuous deeds with measurements or calculations. As stated in the Ornament of Trees Sutra: "Son of good family, you should not be attached to a single root of virtue, nor should you consider it sufficient to perfect a single Dharma gate and a single conduct. Why is that? Son of good family, Bodhisattvas must accumulate immeasurable roots of virtue." It is said. Now, no matter how much we strive for virtue, if we examine it carefully, it is impossible not to mix it with sinful and unwholesome actions. Even if there are occasional instances, most sentient beings, due to their impure minds, find it very difficult to accumulate the roots of virtue associated with the Three Jewels, which are encompassed by the three aspects of preparation, main practice, and conclusion. Therefore, those instances where the virtuous results of fortunate actions ripen once and are then exhausted are like autumn clouds, even if they are mistaken to be as large as Mount Meru, they are very fleeting. Even a simple thought of stretching out one's hand or bending one's back should be transformed into a purely virtuous action. The fourth mind training is: As stated in the Son Letter: "One must obtain the Guru's instructions by any means, thinking that one must obtain them by whatever means possible." Therefore, as mentioned earlier, no matter where one wanders in the six realms, one must understand that there is no happiness even as small as the tip of a needle, only suffering. Even if one only understands this, merely being disgusted with it will not liberate one from that suffering; one must focus solely on the methods that are beneficial to it. What are those? As stated in the Sutra of Advice to King Clear Victory: "Great King, at that time, there is no protector or refuge other than the Holy Dharma. The Holy Dharma is the protector, refuge, support, island, and ally at that time." It is said. But this is not just empty talk; just as butter is extracted from milk and smoke arises from fire, one must rely solely on the root of the path, the virtuous friend, and extract the essence from it. As stated in the Compendium: "One should always rely on wise Gurus, why? Because the qualities of wisdom arise from them. Just as a group of sick people rely on a doctor for healing, one should rely on a virtuous friend without distraction." It is said, therefore one should rely on the Guru.
