Due to the thought of being stingy with things like wealth and respect, contemplate being born in an instant as a preta with external obscurations. When one goes far away, exhausted, with the thought of enjoying the fruits of trees and water, wind, etc., one is guarded by people carrying weapons, and pus, blood, etc., flow out in an undesirable way, and one is extremely thirsty and unable to bear the suffering of thirst (769). Or, as a preta with internal obscurations, one dwells in a desolate place, a yellow city where there is nothing desirable such as water and plants, and suffers the pain of not finding food or drink for months or years. Even if one finds a little medicine, it cannot fit into a mouth the size of the eye of a needle. Even if one drinks a little, it cannot pass through a throat as thin as a horse's tail. Even if it passes through, a stomach as big as Mount Meru cannot be filled, and limbs as thin as reeds cannot support the body, etc., and one experiences extremely miserable suffering. Also, as a preta with obscurations of food and drink, when food and drink enter the stomach, they burn like fire and incinerate the body. One eats one's own flesh, and one is miserable from eating excrement and urine. When the season is warm, the cool touch of the moon also becomes hot. When the winter is bitterly cold, even the rays of the sun are obscured, and the temperature is uneven. Just by looking at rivers, they dry up, and desolate scenes appear unpleasantly (770), etc., and one experiences immeasurable suffering of thirst. Knowing that such suffering is not short-lived but must be experienced for fifty thousand years, one becomes discouraged and despondent. Again, in the sky in front of one, the root guru appears in the form of the great Orgyen (Padmasambhava), and says: 'Alas! The suffering you have accumulated through stinginess has fallen upon you without fail, and even the Buddhas of the three times cannot save you. As the Victorious Shakyamuni Buddha said to King Bearer of Form, take ownership of your karma and contemplate the joy of the exhaustion of negative karma. With compassion for the suffering of sentient beings like yourself, generate the courage to take upon yourself the addition of your own suffering, and rely on the antidote.' Just hearing these words, one exclaims: 'Ah! Sentient beings like me, from clinging to self, have wandered in endless samsara until now and have experienced such suffering. Those of my kind (771)'

Alas, these hungry ghosts, as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, experience only this suffering, which is truly pitiful. Now, I should endure my own suffering and gladly accept the suffering of other sentient beings. When I imagine the city of hungry ghosts vanishing from its very foundation, negative karma is instantly exhausted, and I attain Buddhahood, inseparable from the intention of the Great Orgyen (Padmasambhava). I should think that those beings are also guided by the light from my heart and examine the Khenpo (teacher) of transference. As mentioned earlier about the hell realm, it is recorded in the Vinaya Sutra: Thereafter, Maudgalyayana's son reached the end of the ocean and saw many short-lived sentient beings in hell, like mortars, brooms, and trees, tormented by suffering. And the neighboring hells are located on both sides of the eight hot hells. Their respective situations are recorded on page (772) of the Supreme Vehicle Treasury: Short-lived hells exist in various forms of earth, water, fire, and wind, without a fixed place. Neighboring hells are located around the eight hot hells. Thus, they are summarized into one category. Regarding the hungry ghosts just mentioned, the Omniscient Great One (Longchenpa) also said: Hungry ghosts wander in the sky, dwelling in the realm of space. Those dwelling in the realm of space are the first three mentioned. Hungry ghosts that wander in the sky or are subtle, in the Root Tantra of the Wooden Horse, it says: The hungry ghost demons that wander in the sky, as well as yakshas, rakshasas, fierce tsan spirits, and kings, etc. As shown above, it should be explained in detail to intelligent students, otherwise, a simple explanation will suffice to achieve the purpose. Then, contemplate the suffering of animals and train the mind. In the Guidance on the Three Goods of the Friendly Letter, it says: In the realm of animals, there is also killing, bondage, beating, and various sufferings. For those who abandon peaceful virtue, (773) they devour each other, which is extremely terrible. For animals, they are categorized into two types: submerged and scattered. Contemplate the suffering described in the Earth Chapter and keep it in mind. Again, due to afflictions like darkness caused by one's own ignorance, one instantly sinks into the outer great ocean, where animals such as fish, conches, and crocodiles are submerged, without any space, crowded like dregs of beer.
