With the intention of taking refuge, repeat after this. Thus instructed, the monks are asked to listen. I, named so-and-so. From this time forth, until the end of my life. The best of the two-legged, I take refuge in the Buddha. The best of those free from desire, I take refuge in the Dharma. The best of the assemblies, I take refuge in the Sangha. From this time forth until the end of my life, please, venerable one, accept me as a layperson who upholds the three refuges. After reciting this three times, the teacher says: It is a means. The disciple says: Excellent. Having thus recited three times and well obtained the refuge vow, there are three things to be learned, the first being the precepts of what to abandon. From the Great Nirvana Sutra: Whoever goes for refuge to the Buddha, that one is a true layperson. Never at any time does one go for refuge to another god. Going for refuge to the sacred Dharma, one is free from the mind of harming living beings. Also going for refuge to the Sangha, one does not side with other heretics. As it is said. Having gone for refuge to the Buddha, one does not go for refuge to worldly gods, nor does one prostrate. Having gone for refuge to the Dharma, one abandons harming sentient beings. Having gone for refuge to the Sangha, one does not associate with heretics. Secondly (692), the precepts of what to accomplish. As the Prince Immaculate says: They also have supreme faith in the form, and day and night they constantly go for refuge in remembrance. As it is said, having gone for refuge to the Buddha, one does not despise even the mere form of the Tathagata's image, nor does one step over its shadow, and one makes offerings and respects it. Having gone for refuge to the Dharma, one generates supreme respect even for a single four-line verse of scripture that exists in the form of its letters, and one does not despise even a single letter. Having gone for refuge to the Sangha, one definitely respects from the ordained community that is the present support, even to those wearing yellow robes. Thirdly, the precepts of conformity. In the Basis of Collection, it says: Relying on a holy person, listening to the holy Dharma, and practicing in accordance with the Sangha are the (causes) of going for refuge. As it is said, rely on a holy person, follow the Dharma, and train in conduct that is in accordance with the Dharma, a heap of food and drink...

Firstly, offer to the Three Jewels, day and night, or six times, three times, or even once, remember the virtues of the Three Jewels, and strive to take refuge. After saying this, have them prostrate three times, and then dedicate the merit. Even householders who rely on such rituals will obtain immeasurable merit. In the degenerate age, those who shave their hair like strands and rely on the monastic community, if they are not restrained by vows, merely showing conformity to the path, with such a pure intention, Rangjung Dorje composed this in the glorious Padma Odling. (693) The ritual for offering to the resident monks. (694) In the center of the golden foundation formed from light, a precious immeasurable palace free from the sound of horses, surrounded by groves of Tala trees and rivers of fragrant water, in the center are thousand-petaled lotuses and a thousand stamens. I invite the supreme Shakyamuni Buddha and the sixteen Arhats, along with the retinue of many Shravaka Arhats, to come with great compassion. I offer the offerings of the eight auspicious symbols, auspicious signs, and the seven royal possessions, carried by the chariot of the seven branches. Victorious Teacher, your sacred Dharma is the Sutra Pitaka and the Abhidhamma Pitaka. The way to show the path of the teachings as it is, is the sacred Dharma Vinaya Pitaka. Therefore, the sixteen noble Arhats who uphold the Dharma, even though they have attained the state of no more learning, for the benefit of the teachings and beings, still manifest as Shravakas, I prostrate and pray that they remain until the teachings are not destroyed. Mindfulness and so on, like a vast ocean, a great and excellent tree, a body like a golden Mount Meru, I prostrate to the Teacher, the Righteous One. Please bless the teachings and those who uphold them to flourish. On the great snow mountain of Tise (Mount Kailash), the noble Arhat (695) Yanakaja arises, surrounded by one thousand three hundred Arhats. Holding an incense burner and a fan, I prostrate. Please bless the teachings and those who uphold them to flourish. In the crystal forest of the Righteous Mountain, the noble Arhat Pantha, surrounded by one hundred Arhats. Making the gesture of meditation with both hands, I prostrate. Please bless the teachings and those who uphold them to flourish. In the cave of the Seven Leaf Mountain, the noble Arhat Nakula resides there, surrounded by one thousand four hundred Arhats. Making the threatening gesture and holding a fan, I prostrate. Please bless the teachings and those who uphold them to flourish.
