(688) Homage to the All-Knowing! Here, to bestow the refuge vow, which is the basis of all qualities: In a clean place, arrange the supports of the Three Jewels, and arrange excellent offerings. The petitioner first prostrates to the supports, and then prostrates three times to the Lama. Kneel with the right knee on the ground, sit with palms together. The thought is: You are fortunate to have obtained such a rare and precious leisure and endowment. At this time when most of the favorable conditions are complete, other favorable conditions, the four doors of interdependence, are also only fulfilled by taking refuge in the Three Jewels. The basis of all qualities, the precious training of superior discipline, can only be obtained by relying on first taking refuge in the Three Jewels, otherwise it cannot be mastered, so cherish it like the foundation stone of the path. Such a refuge vow, if first obtained from a virtuous friend, will become the basis of shame that considers one's own face and embarrassment that relies on the face of others, etc., and has special necessities, so it is very important to abandon acting arbitrarily and carefully take the refuge vow. Considering from the perspective of benefits, the way in which the three levels of intelligence of a person obtain qualities is also the same. Even a person who has not joined a sect, by merely taking refuge in the Three Jewels, can be protected from the fear of temporary suffering such as the three diseases, the intermediate state, mouths, wild animals, the punishment of the king, diseases and demons. If refuge had a form, then the sky would seem small. The vast ocean is a treasure of water, and it will not be exhausted even if poured out to measure it. This is taught in many words. Such protection is also because of having immeasurable qualities. When remembering the Three Jewels, the Blessed One, the Thus Gone One, the Arhat, etc. If we briefly discuss the merits of remembering the Three Jewels, and the related holy scriptures and commentaries, then the Letter to a Friend says: Liberation depends on oneself, and others cannot provide any help in this. Those who have hearing, discipline, thought, and meditation, please strive to practice the Four Noble Truths. One should always practice superior discipline, superior wisdom, and superior mind. More than one hundred and fifty trainings!

Yang. These three are perfectly contained within. As it is said. Liberation is not dependent on the instructions of a friend, but relies entirely on oneself, through scriptural authority and (690) reasoning, as well as reasons, can be examined, consistent with the superior, much learning, without degeneration, without destruction, without falling, without failing precepts, meditation that is in accordance with the decisive factors, etc., one should focus on the Four Noble Truths. What are the four? The truth of suffering, the truth of the origin, the truth of cessation, and the truth of the path. First, the arising that is characterized by the nature of the five aggregates of grasping is the truth of suffering. Second, the craving that arises again, accompanied by joyful desire, delighting in this and that, from this arises suffering, therefore it is the origin, and is considered the source of suffering. Third, the complete cessation of that craving, complete pacification, that is liberation. Fourth, the truth of the path that leads to the attainment of Nirvana, the Noble Eightfold Path, right view is wisdom without outflows. Right livelihood is abandoning the five wrong livelihoods such as flattery. Right effort is initiating diligence. Right mindfulness is not forgetting the object of focus. Right concentration is the fourth dhyana. Right speech is the four virtuous paths of action. Right action is the three natures of abandoning the non-virtuous paths of action of the body. Right thought is harmlessness, and the thought of renunciation, and so on, many kinds of virtuous thoughts. Similarly, the higher discipline is whatever is completely dedicated to Nirvana. The higher mind is the (691) basis of the Noble Path, the fourth dhyana. The higher wisdom is in accordance with the decisive factors. Within these three trainings, one hundred and fifty-one trainings are contained, diligently studying them, those people are called the Noble Sangha. Like this, the great master of the ocean of qualities, complete with realization and abandonment, the Three Jewels, appearing like dense clouds, residing in front of oneself, from the depths of one's heart
