Having thus divided, if one does not accept it from this very moment with diligence and mindfulness, laziness is like hail, destroying the crops of virtue; like alcohol, it intoxicates one with indulgence in idleness, so one should strive for virtue as if averting a flame from one's head (535). Even if one strives in this way for a while, the evil demons, fearing that their dominion will diminish, will obstruct from many directions, relying on some slight causes, causing the mind to be discouraged and confused; relying on children and sinful friends, one may develop contentment with virtuous deeds. At that time, one should shift the thought that there is no satisfaction in desires to the side of virtuous deeds and strive with diligence. If one does not strive in this way, the other five perfections will also wander in places where they should not stay, so one must value this, this is a prayer. Fourteenth, praying for the perfection of meditation, there are three: May I abide in bliss in this life, progressively advance in excellent qualities, and accomplish the benefit of others through clairvoyance, and may I equally abide in the meaning of meditation. The first line refers to the meditation practiced by beginners, such as the four meditations, the four formless meditations, and the meditations that are also present in the continuum of those who have entered the path. Even if there are some practitioners who have attained these meditative minds, because they are freed from the noise of scattered thoughts, they abide blissfully in this life, and if they are seized by the power of the two accumulations, they will also become the basis of the noble path, so it is not meaningless. As for phenomena, the elaborations of phenomena dissolve into the dharmadhatu, the appearing objects are uninterrupted, and there is no clinging there, this is shamatha; the individual observation that is inseparable from this essence is vipashyana. Like this, the union of shamatha and vipashyana is not merely a pretense made with a false mind, but the excellent qualities of the accumulations and the path of application that arise in the continuum are gradually attained, and the benefit of others is also accomplished with subtle clairvoyance, so it is called meditation that distinguishes meaning. From the first bhumi of the path of seeing, the mind is liberated from defilements, so it is the Tathagata's virtuous meditation, so I pray to be able to equally abide in it (536). Fifteenth, there are three perfections of wisdom: May conventional reality be like an illusion.
