Those obscured by earth are sentient beings. Those obscured by the net of the eight consciousnesses are those with minds. Those obscured by the proximity of karma and habitual patterns are those with obscurations. Those obscured by the nature of ignorance are called those with darkness, and so forth. Therefore, such a luminous reality, hidden in all lower tantras, is manifested here, one should know this oneself. Fourth, the method of practicing through the path has two aspects: the entrance gate, which explains the ripening empowerment; and the essential path, which explains the key to liberation. The first has four parts: the basis for entering the empowerment; the actual path of empowerment; the ultimate fruition of ripening; and the certainty of those vows. The first also has four parts: the qualities of the master who bestows the empowerment; the nature of the disciple to be empowered; the common practices, and how the empowerment is bestowed, which is the activity of empowerment. The first is: In the Ornament of Clear Realization, it says: "The great Vajradhara master, the order should be well explained. The master with complete qualities is the source of all qualities and the basis for complete enlightenment." Thus, a master should possess all the qualities and be free from all faults. In particular, they should possess six qualities: having completely abandoned worldly dharmas; having few desires and being content; being skilled in practice and having experience; being skilled in the words and meanings of the tantras and diligent in practice; being skilled in the meaning of the view and having complete ability; and having great compassion and being happy to give. If one is like this, it is sufficient. This teaches the supreme vehicle, enhances the benefit of practice, and removes obstacles on the bhumis and paths. Arrogant and proud like a king in the world, or foolishly considering lineage and family as qualities of a virtuous friend, or having heard a little but avoiding the true meaning, not considering the meaning of the profound secret mantra, speaking rudely to everyone, and so on, are the behaviors of an evil friend. Even though one is not mature oneself, one has no ability to liberate the continuum of others, only conveying the information of empowerment and transmission, but boasting of being a great teaching, claiming to have perfected all the skills of the oral instructions, such a person cannot ripen and liberate the continuum of disciples, so they should be abandoned. As it says in the Self-Arisen Tantra: "Those who do not know and are very arrogant, foolish ministers embellishing words, do not consider the meaning of secret mantra."
