Therefore, Devadatta, becoming a thorn in the heart with jealousy and pride in his strength, seized the elephant's neck with his left hand and struck it with the palm of his right hand, killing the elephant, thinking, "If this young Siddhartha does not become a Chakravartin, then what elephant can be offered later?" Then, the younger brother Nanda came and, in order to subdue Devadatta's pride and power, grabbed the elephant's tail and threw it seven steps from the doorway. Later, the Bodhisattva came and, in order to subdue the power of both, without dismounting from the chariot, he grabbed the tail with the thumb of his right foot and threw it to a place one yojana away from the city, causing the ground to sink, which became known as the Elephant Hollow. There, the faithful built a stupa, and the gods also praised him with verses. After that, all the rivals in the artistic competitions and the crowds who had come to watch the spectacle came out of the city and, having arranged the venue, competed in various artistic forms such as writing, numbers, arithmetic, jumping, swimming, racing, and wrestling. No one could find a flaw in the Bodhisattva, and all the gods and humans praised him, exclaiming "Ema ala la!" Then, they began the archery competition, with the common people hitting one and two arrows, Devadatta hitting three, Nanda hitting five, and the Bodhisattva hitting seven, all piercing through the oil, unmatched by anyone. There, they began the chopping competition, with Devadatta chopping one iron horse, Nanda chopping two, and the Bodhisattva chopping seven tala trees, drums, pigs, etc., all piercing through the oil. Where the iron arrow pierced, the nagas pulled it out, leaving a mark, and the faithful also built a stupa. Even though the young Shakyas still did not quell their pride and started the competition again, the Bodhisattva's power increased even more, suppressing the pride of all the mighty and arrogant strongmen, and raising the banner of victory in the sixty-four arts. Regarding the activities of the consorts playing: Afterwards, the Bodhisattva again rode in the chariot and returned to Kapilavastu. The later fortune-tellers praised him, saying that if this young man does not renounce the world at the age of twelve, he will become a Chakravartin. Therefore, (King Suddhodana) appointed him as his regent, and the famous Yashodhara.

He took a consort with a retinue of twenty thousand. Similarly, when the daughter of Shakya Bell Sound Woman was residing in a splendid mansion, the youth saw her from his chariot and his heart was captivated. He welcomed her as a consort, along with her retinue of twenty thousand, and they indulged in joy and delight. Later, Shakya Time Good's daughter, named Wild Deer Born, was looking out from a window. The youth threw a pearl necklace, which wrapped around the girl's neck. When the assembly of people saw this, they informed her father, and Wild Deer Born was also welcomed, along with her retinue of twenty thousand. Thus, the consort's retinue numbered sixty thousand, and with the twenty thousand previously offered by the king, there was a gathering of eighty thousand consorts. Together with these consorts, until the age of twenty-nine, he enjoyed the abundance of desirable qualities. Although he understood the appearance of desirable qualities as illusory, he was not tainted by the fault of clinging, and he did not fall away from virtuous conduct. As for his act of renunciation: At that time, the victorious ones of the ten directions urged him with the sound of music, saying: 'Immortality without sorrow is Buddhahood, satisfy the thirst-stricken with nectar. Remember the supreme words of your former vows. Quickly manifest enlightenment from this city!' Hearing this, he understood the sign of renunciation, and with longing in his heart, he had the charioteer drive the chariot from the eastern gate of the city to the eastern pleasure garden. On the way, he saw a Brahmin woman emanated by the gods, whiter than a conch shell, her body thin and trembling, appearing old and decrepit. He asked what this was. The charioteer replied, 'This god is called old age.' Old age means that one will soon die. 'Am I also not exempt from the law of old age?' 'Even the gods are not exempt from the law of old age.' Hearing this, his heart was momentarily saddened, and he turned back. Similarly, on the road going out from the southern gate, he saw someone afflicted by the suffering of illness; on the road going out from the western gate, he saw a dead person placed on a stretcher, with the bereaved people uttering cries of sorrow; on the road going out from the northern gate, he saw monks who were peaceful, disciplined, and virtuous. Then he began to contemplate the faults of household life and the benefits of liberation.
