Before the teachings had run their course, a rule was established that no Arhat should pass into Parinirvana. When the Dharma was being taught here, many monks came and caused disturbance, so "Let us go to Magadha," and the entire Sangha was sent to travel. Ananda was appointed as the water distributor. Mahakashyapa went along the straight path and arrived in Rajagrha, and Ajatashatru saw him from afar, remembered the Buddha, and fell to the ground from the elephant's back. Mahakashyapa caught him with his miraculous powers. A rule was established that this should not be done in the future. Ajatashatru offered provisions and vowed to spend the summer retreat in the Nyagrodha cave. There, Mahakashyapa knew that Ananda had not yet attained Arhatship and that there was still some defilement in his mind, so he needed to be tamed with rebuke. In the supreme assembly, he said, "Go away with desire and hatred, inauspiciously!" Ananda said, "I and the Buddha's teachings have been entrusted to you, but I have no fault." Mahakashyapa said, "Put up a measuring stick." Then he made eight kinds of rebukes and announced expulsion. Although there is such a saying, because this question and answer are not seen, Omniscient Samyepa considered that the rebuke of "giving a wrong answer to the Buddha's question" should not be counted. Therefore, what is known as the seven rebukes along with a small rebuke is as follows: Mahakashyapa said, "When you offered the Buddha a drink, you offered muddy water, you made a mistake." Ananda replied, "At that time, Mara stirred up the Kakuta River, and I could not find clear water." Mahakashyapa said, "If you held the begging bowl up to the sky, the gods would fill it with nectar, you did not even know that, it is also your fault." When Mara requested Parinirvana, you were asked, but you did not request it that way, it is also your fault. Ananda replied, "At that time, Mara's rays covered me, and my memory was lost." Mahakashyapa said, "The Sugata abides in the miraculous foot, and if he wishes, he can abide for a kalpa or even longer than a kalpa." When he said this, if you had requested it, he would not have passed into Parinirvana, you did not even know that, it is also your fault. Putting the robe under a stone and sewing it, you made a mistake, and the answer to this was that at that time, the one who was holding it could not be found.
