In these writings, all the Buddha's teachings are collected, especially all the key points of the empowerment, transmission, and oral instructions of the Great Perfection of Clear Light, like hundreds of rivers converging under a bridge, possessing great miraculous secrets. Because the lifeblood of the Nyingtik teachings exists only in this, those who hold this teaching should cherish the transmission of these empowerments, transmissions, and oral instructions, so that their meaning is not lost. Here, the essential meaning of the four root empowerments is: First, the outer with-signs vase empowerment purifies the obscurations of the body, infuses the energy of the body, and empowers one to practice the generation stage. Then, the inner without-signs secret empowerment purifies the obscurations of speech, infuses the energy of speech, and empowers one to practice the completion stage of tummo, bindu, and mantra of the letter wheel. The very profound without-signs wisdom-jnana empowerment purifies the obscurations of mind, infuses the energy of mind, and empowers one to practice great bliss union and realize the wisdom of primordial purity, the nature of reality. The utterly without-signs word empowerment, the precious empowerment, purifies all obscurations, as well as the nature of ignorance towards knowable objects, infuses the energy of self-arisen clear light, and empowers one to actually practice the meaning of spontaneously accomplished presence. The internal distinctions of these empowerments are immeasurable, but the reason for determining them as four is: When a fortunate person enters this path, First, if one cuts with signs by means of the outer with-signs empowerment, one cannot cut the signs of the aggregation of appearance and consciousness. If one does not gather the essential points by means of the inner without-signs, one cannot enter the path of the mind. If one does not cut the end by means of the secret very profound without-signs, the lamp cannot illuminate the path. If one does not give the introduction by means of the unsurpassed utterly without-signs, the path of seeing cannot be clarified. Similarly, outwardly, the method of purifying the two, wind and mind, and the two causes of parents, that is, four; inwardly, the method of entering the four differences of the channels of the four chakras; secretly, the method of showing the four lamps and four appearances; and unsurpassed, from the determination of the four signs, the result of determining the four measures arises as the four kayas, therefore it is also determined as four. Third, the determination of the result of the complete empowerment is divided into two: temporary and ultimate. First, in accordance with the characteristic vehicle, the general presentation of the way of deciding the path; in accordance with the Vajrayana, the presentation of the four vidyadharas.

This is a detailed explanation of the order of attainment. First, the four applications of mindfulness with characteristics are the support for attaining the twelve branches of the path of accumulation. The heat, peak, forbearance, and supreme mundane qualities without characteristics are the nature of the five faculties and five powers, and are the support for perfecting the four aspects of the path of joining. The mindfulness and discrimination of phenomena without characteristics are the nature of the seven branches of enlightenment, and are the support for perfecting the path of seeing. The right view without characteristics is the nature of the eightfold noble path, and is the support for perfecting the nine bhumis of the path of cultivation. I have written about the distinctions of these in my instruction manual, "The White Lotus." Second, by recollecting the aspects of the four empowerments, there are four vidyadharas. That is, the mind has matured into the form of a deity, but the body has not yet matured, which is the vidyadhara of maturation. Having attained liberation in this very life, having mastery over birth and death, is the vidyadhara of longevity. The body and mind have matured into a deity, which is the mahamudra vidyadhara. The spontaneous accomplishment of both one's own and others' benefit is the spontaneously accomplished vidyadhara. Among these four, there are two with mastery and two without mastery, which are definitely eight. If divided by partial distinctions, they are divided into four each. First, in the bhumi of maturation or yoga, there are also four: yoga, action yoga, conduct yoga, and transformation yoga. In longevity mastery or great yoga, there are four: the bhumi of extreme yoga, the bhumi of yoga that determines one's own bhumi, the bhumi of scattered yoga, and the bhumi of complete yoga free from activity. In mahamudra or the bhumi of discriminating yoga, there are four: the bhumi of symbols, the bhumi of meaning, the bhumi of the inseparability of symbols and meaning, and the bhumi of non-mixture. In spontaneous accomplishment or the bhumi of realization yoga, there are four: the bhumi of miraculous transformation, the bhumi of distinct realization, the bhumi of manifestation, and the bhumi of warrior class discrimination. In general, there are sixteen in total. Thus, the determination of establishing the sixteen bhumis as the vidyadhara bhumi is that one hundred miracles occur. On the first bhumi, one can emanate one's own body into hundreds of thousands, and emanate those bodies into hundreds of thousands of limbs, and emanate one body into hundreds of thousands of heads, and hundreds of thousands of bodies can emanate heads.
