As soon as the sword of oath was drawn from its sheath, the power of the sword caused one of the king's eyes to fall to the ground. Because of this, the king, along with his entourage, became frightened and sought refuge. When he magically reattached the eye, he was extremely grateful. He requested to serve with reverence and stay, but he did not agree. Instead, he admonished to govern the kingdom according to the Dharma and to establish twenty Buddhist foundations, and then he went to the central region (referring to India). At the glorious Nalanda Monastery, he was ordained by Khenpo Gyalwai Lha, a descendant of Chandragomin. He was named Shantideva. There, he stayed with the Panditas, inwardly listening to the Dharma from the noble Manjushri, and attained countless gates of Samadhi. He perfectly composed the Compendium of Trainings and the Compendium of Sutras, becoming the pinnacle of scholars. However, to others, he ate five large bowls of food every day, slept day and night, and like a bum, did not engage in any hearing, contemplation, or meditation. The monks said, "This third kind of person who wastes the offerings of faith should be expelled." Therefore, they deliberated to recite the scriptures in turn and let him leave on his own. During the month of miracles, they urged him to participate in the recitation of scriptures in turn. At that time, the teacher repeatedly declined, saying, "We know nothing." But the Panditas deliberated to test him and strongly urged him, and finally he agreed. There, most gathered to humiliate him, and some gathered in a place of doubt. In the midst (of the crowd), a huge throne was set up. At that time, the teacher himself came and sat on the throne without hesitation, saying, "Shall I recite a scripture that has been recited before, or shall I recite a scripture that has not been heard before?" Everyone was eager to test him, so they urged him to recite a scripture that had not been heard before. There, he began to preach the Bodhisattvacharyavatara (A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life), starting from the verse, "When things and non-things, do not appear before the mind," he ascended into the sky, and his body became invisible. However, accompanied by the voice of Brahma, the sound of the Dharma did not cease until the scripture was completed. At that time, they all said in one voice, "This holy being is of inexhaustible wisdom!"

It made a loud noise. When the scholars who had obtained Dharani remembered it by heart, the Kashmiris produced more than a thousand shlokas, and they added praises with their own wisdom. But those who were called the central region people, that is, the easterners, produced only seven hundred shlokas, and it was said that the confession and knowledge were lacking, and they used the Madhyamaka praise as a supplement. The central region people did not have praises, nor did they have the vow to start, and it is said that there was one containing a thousand shlokas, which was considered the authority of the subsequent mantra. There was doubt about the location of the assembly. Having heard that he went to the city of Kalinga in the Trilinga region and resided there, three scholars went and requested him to go to Nalanda, but he did not allow it. They asked, "Which of the three ways that you have each remembered with Dharani and written down is correct?" He replied, "It is correct according to the way the central region people remember it." They asked, "Then where can the *Śikṣāsamuccaya* and the *Sūtrasamuccaya* be seen?" He replied, "In the window of the inner room, there is a book written on bark with the fine letters of a scholar." In that place, there was a monastery with a forest, and he lived together with about five hundred monks. He used his magical powers to make the forest animals that came to the inner room invisible, so the monks saw the animals go into the teacher's inner room, but they did not see them come out, and the monks also knew that the number of animals was decreasing. There, when they looked in from the window, they saw the teacher eating meat, and the monks began to object. At this time, those animals regained their vitality, became strong, and came out and went into the depths of the forest. Later, he also abandoned the signs of ordination and went to a practice without acceptance or rejection. At a certain gate, a person saw that the water from washing feet splashed on the teacher's feet, and it boiled like it had touched red-hot iron. Later, in the territory of the king of Bati Bihar, a heretical scholar named "Happiness Maker" came to debate the inner and outer doctrines, and challenged magical powers and spells. The other Narpas became timid. At this time, the person who had previously seen the washing water incident remembered it and thought that he must stop this debate.
