Grasping the back of the (dharma) seat, he sat in front of it. In the sacred land of India, whoever wants to debate stands in front of the (dharma) seat. Those who listen to the Dharma do so with respect. Therefore, Chandrakirti considered (the other) to be a debating opponent. When asked what qualities he knew, (he) replied that he knew the Pāṇinīya-vyākaraṇa (Sanskrit: पाणिनೀಯ-व्याकरण, Romanized Sanskrit: Pāṇinīya-vyākaraṇa, literally: Grammar of Pāṇini), the "Praise in One Hundred and Fifty Verses," and the "Praise of the Exact Meaning of the Names" (Sanskrit: Nāmasaṃgīti, Devanagari: नामसंगीति, Romanized Sanskrit: Nāmasaṃgīti, literally: Compilation of Names). Although this seemed like humility, he admitted that he was proficient in grammar, the Sutras, and all the Mantras, so he was asked if he was Chandragomin. He replied, "That is so." (Chandrakirti) said, "Then, you are a great scholar, and the Sangha should welcome you. Please return for a while." (Chandragomin) said, "I am a layperson, and it is not appropriate for the Sangha to welcome me." (Chandrakirti) said, "There is a way to do this, which is to place the holy Manjushri on a chariot. Then, proceed while waving a yak tail fan. It will become a scene of welcoming Manjushri." So three chariots were made, with the holy image placed in the middle one, and two scholars waving yak tail fans on the left and right. When the Sangha came to welcome him in front, Chandragomin felt that Manjushri was appearing in person, so he composed a praise of forty verses. Chandrakirti said, "Manjushri himself is welcoming you, do you have such great qualities?" Many people who came to watch also saw it and said so, (Chandragomin) stayed in place and was known as the one who was personally welcomed by Manjushri. There, Chandragomin's faith greatly increased, (he) drove the chariot as he pleased, and went in front of Chandrakirti. Chandrakirti thought, "This person is arrogant, I must debate with him." So, Chandragomin, relying on the tradition of Asanga, advocated for the Mind-Only school. Chandrakirti, relying on the tradition of Nagarjuna, advocated for emptiness of inherent existence. They debated for seven years. During the debate, Chandragomin was taught by the holy Avalokiteśvara, so Chandrakirti seemed to be about to fail for a while. He thought, "This person must have someone teaching him how to debate." (Chandrakirti) secretly followed Chandragomin and saw him in the stone statue temple of the holy Avalokiteśvara. He saw the stone statue of Avalokiteśvara teaching Chandragomin like a teacher teaching a student. So the holy one (Chandrakirti) no longer

It is said that when he was teaching the Dharma, his finger remained erect, hence he was known as Arya Fingertip. It is said that the debate was so long that villagers who came to watch, even boys and girls, could sing songs with some understanding of the arguments. Finally, when the debate subsided, Chandrakirti prayed to Avalokiteśvara. In a dream, Avalokiteśvara said, "You have already been blessed by Mañjuśrī, so you don't need (blessings). However, I have slightly blessed Candragomin." It is also said that practitioners of the Guhyasamāja Ārya group are familiar with the local history. Also, once, a poor girl was getting married, and because she had no dowry, she wandered around begging in various places. Finally, she begged from Candragomin. Candragomin had nothing except the clothes he was wearing and a copy of the Aṣṭasāhasrikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra. With compassion for the poor, he prayed to a painted image of Tārā on the wall and shed tears. The Tārā image actually manifested, and from the various precious jewels adorning her body, she took off a priceless necklace and offered it to the teacher. Therefore, the painted image lost its adornments and became known as the Unadorned Tārā. It is said that there are still traces where the adornments were removed. At that time, the master Chandrakirti saw a separate grammatical text composed by himself, called Kuntuzangpo, which was a grammatical treatise compiled in verse form. Realizing that his own grammatical compilation was not as good as Kuntuzangpo, he thought it would not bring benefit and threw the book into a well. Then, a holy mother said, "A treatise composed by a scholar out of arrogance will have little benefit. But the book you threw away was composed by another with good intentions, so it will benefit sentient beings. Take it out of the well!" It is said that he took the book out as prophesied. Some say that when Kuntuzangpo became very popular, Candragomin prayed to the Arya, asking that his own work also become popular. As a result, the popularity of Kuntuzangpo was interrupted, and Candragomin's work became popular. Chandrakirti was frustrated by this and threw his treatise into the well, so the well became known as Chandra Well. These two stories differ completely in their narrative style and content, so they may not be accepted unless by their respective followers. But in any case, it is said that whoever drinks water from that well becomes very intelligent, which is a common point. Kuntuzangpo
