Hearing that (he) could revive it again, (they) came to invite him in order to cultivate vast roots of virtue. Just as (he) was about to depart with them, a messenger arrived saying, "His mother has fallen ill." Therefore, (he) developed a longing to quickly return to his homeland. At that time, the teacher said, "If you desire a Brahmin, I will quickly teach (him)." Having said this, (he) exhaled a breath and shortened a three-month journey to two hours. When invited by the merchant Dhanarakṣita, (he) did the same and stayed for a long time in both the places of Kṛṣṇarāja and Oḍḍiyāna, making the Mahāyāna Dharma flourish. Between those two places, (he) built hundreds of thousands of stupas and twenty-five temples, establishing each one as a foundation for the Mahāyāna Dharma. (He) did the same in Magadha as well. Once, while teaching the Dharma in a small kingdom near the border city of Amogya, a Garlog war broke out. (He) advised the assembly of disciples to cultivate patience. Everyone remained still and patient, as a result, the arrows that were shot turned to dust. When the leader of the army struck the teacher with a sword, (his) body was not harmed, but the sword broke into eight pieces. Although harsh words, like sharp thorns, pierced from all directions, the armor of patience was not damaged in the slightest. Those people, therefore, developed faith, prostrated, and left. Because (he) could understand the thoughts of others, (he) clearly explained and taught whatever the disciples did not understand or were in doubt about. Therefore, there was no one who did not become proficient after listening to this teacher's teachings, and thousands upon thousands arose who had generated the qualities of realization and the path. Because (he) taught not just one particular school of thought, but from all aspects, there were countless disciples of both the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna. Especially in the time of Nāgārjuna, the Sangha was mostly Śrāvakayāna, and even when the Mahāyāna Dharma became very prosperous later on, there were not even ten thousand monks. However, during the time of this teacher, there were tens of thousands of monks who upheld the Mahāyāna Dharma, and therefore (he) was known as the protector of the Mahāyāna Dharma. In the latter part of (his) life, (he) stayed at Nālandā for about twelve years. When winter came, every day heretics would come to debate, with sharp weapons of various kinds of knowledge.

Having refuted the tenets of those schools, nearly a thousand heretics converted to the inner doctrine. Wherever there were monks with degenerate views, misconduct, or improper rituals, he disciplined them, making the Sangha extremely pure. He made the manifestation of the Mahayana, which existed only in name, supremely clear, and rested in the sacred city of peace in Rajagriha. The teacher who adorns the world, the lord of the wise, Vasubandhu, from the sprout of his birth, performed the ceremony of intelligence. Until the awakening of the power of wisdom in letters and expression, he was the same as his elder brother. Having become a monk at Nalanda, he mastered the entire Vinaya Pitaka of the Shravakas. Regarding the Dharma verses, the tenets of the eighteen schools, and that which became the chariot of reasoning, in order to climb to its peak, he approached the teacher Sanghabhadra in Kashmir. He became proficient in treatises such as the Vibhasha, the sutras of the eighteen schools, the differences in the Vinaya texts, the doctrines of the six heretics, and all places of logic. There, for several years, he distinguished between reason and unreason, and became the lord of the Shravaka Vinaya Pitaka. Intending to return to Magadha, he safely passed through the path without harm from yakshas, evil spirits, or thieves. At Nalanda, upon seeing the five-part treatise composed by the noble Asanga, although the youth of hearing was flourishing, due to the narrowness of the Shravaka's wisdom, he did not comprehend the Mahayana. The wisdom of logic is not compatible with the appearance of purity, so in the place of listening to the supreme deity, he was troubled by doubts, and spoke disparagingly of the Mahayana Dharma and individuals: "Alas! Asanga practiced meditation in the forest for twelve years. The meditation was not accomplished, but he composed a doctrine like an elephant carrying a heavy load on its back." The elder brother, having heard this, thought that the time for taming had come. He instructed his two disciples to recite the Dashabhumika Sutra and the Akshayamati Sutra separately, and instructed them to recite the Akshayamati Sutra at dusk and the Dashabhumika Sutra at dawn, and then sent them to his younger brother.
