It is said that as soon as he was born, in order to show his swift progress towards the path of the four immeasurables, he took seven steps in each of the four directions, and from the footprints, the lotus stamens offered by the gods appeared distinctly. When he was in the Lumbini Garden, the flowers opened naturally. There were also five hundred Shakya youths, including his younger brother Nanda, and five hundred excellent riders, including Sngags-ldan. This great earth shook violently and was filled with great light, so the four border kingdoms each assumed that they had a son. Then, he followed all the spiritual friends, and learned writing, arithmetic from insect armor, and riding elephants from Shangpo Sanglen, mastering many arts, and resided in the palace. At that time, his father instructed that daughters from the three Shakya clans, holding clubs and other weapons, should be given to him as consorts. The prince said, "Our lineage of gods lies in knowing how to wrestle, not in anything else." Thereupon, his father's face darkened, and the prince said, "In the three realms, there is no one who dares to compete with me in strength and skill." He vowed to prove his ability, and proclaimed a contest of skills with the violent and arrogant Shakyas, and then set out to the outside of the city. At that time, the elephant that had come from Vaishali to offer to the prince was killed by Devadatta with just a clap of his hands, out of extreme jealousy. Nanda threw it with force from the gatehouse to the outside. To demonstrate the power of both, the Bodhisattva, without dismounting from the chariot, grabbed the tail with his toe and threw it into the land beyond seven Tala trees, and the gods praised and extolled him. Then, they began to compete, stacking seven Tala trees, iron rings, and water jars, and then cutting through them with thin arrows. Devadatta shot through three, Nanda shot through five, and the prince shot through all of them, and from the place where the arrow fell, a spring of water with eight qualities, called 'Arrow Water Spring,' emerged. Similarly, there were six arts, including competing in wrestling with youthful strength, riding elephants, and walking like a swan in a great river.

In all sixty-four sacred places, no one dared to hold the vajra like the Bodhisattva. The Lord of Worldly Knowledge, in a manner similar to Ṛṣika, tames beings. In order to avoid the faults of being controlled by others, he was free from the five faults of women and possessed eight qualities. He married sixty thousand of the most excellent consorts, each with twenty thousand attendants, and enjoyed the appearance of desirable qualities as if they were illusions. Acting in this way was also to truly initiate and transform the reins of existence into Dharma. From the sound of the lute, the power of previous aspirations was awakened. With desire as the charioteer, he went to the four directions of the city and saw the four signs of birth, old age, sickness, and death. His heart was deeply saddened, and he said: Aging, sickness, and death will occur. If these three did not exist, I would also happily enjoy these delightful places. Therefore, perfect prosperity is also not permanent, accompanied by the suffering of change, bound by pervasive conditioned phenomena, and the nature of suffering upon suffering linked like a chain caused him great sorrow, and he vowed to renounce. At that time, the entourage of Śuddhodana, fearing that the young man would renounce, diligently guarded the interior and gates of the city, not allowing him to leave. On the final night, he bowed to his father and bound him with vows, eliminating the boundaries that his parents did not allow. Riding on the horse Kanthaka, accompanied by the service of the Four Great Kings, he departed from the expanse of the sky. There, in front of the pure stupa, he cut off his hair himself, abandoning the signs other than renunciation. He exchanged and wore the clothes of Śāna and the robes of a renunciant. In Vaiśālī and Rājagṛha, he found that those logicians who were said to possess great esoteric instructions had nothing more than long noses and excessive behavior. Although he had attained the rank of a teacher of the samādhi of the peak of existence, he knew that those samādhis and practices were not the path to liberation from the faults of existence, and so he went to the great river Nairañjanā.
