Saying "The earth cracks!", the body was beaten like a reed. There, Śāriputra wrapped it in the folds of his Dharma robe, carried it, and took it to the city of Śiṃśapāvana. Knowing that he would not live, he thought, 'I do not even want to hear of the death of a friend, let alone see it, what need is there to say more?' Then he went to glorious Nālandā, and there, in the morning, he passed into parinirvana together with four thousand arhats. In the afternoon, Maudgalyāyana's son passed into parinirvana together with four hundred arhats. Furthermore, many arhats passed into parinirvana like a fire whose fuel is exhausted. Then, entrusting the Buddha's teachings, together with the fourfold retinue, to the great Sthavira Kāśyapa, removing the empty covering of his body, (the Buddha said) 'Monks, look at the body of the Tathagata! To look upon the Tathagata is as difficult to obtain as the Udumbara flower. Monks, do not speak, for all compounded things are of the nature of decay.' Thus, by the cause of renunciation, he exhorted the lazy disciples to engage in the Dharma, and then, in the place of a pair of Śāla trees, he completely passed into parinirvana. There, the great Kāśyapa came from the land of the nāgas. After praying to the relics, the fire blazed up spontaneously, and the relics became cool. According to the differences in their respective fortunes, they were divided into eight parts, and made the heart of stupas. The well-spoken words of the Tathagata, becoming the heart of the ocean of scriptures, namely the treasury of vidyādharas, or the realization stories of the precious collection of the hundred thousand tantras of the early translation, called 'The Ornament Spreading to the Corners of Jambudvipa'.
