Regarding the lineage of transmission, some say it is seven generations, while the Kashmiri scholars consider it eight. The commentary on the Lankavatara Sutra presents a different view. The seven generations of transmission refer to those who made great contributions to the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha, unmatched by anyone else. Furthermore, there are accounts of Naropa transmitting the Dharma to Dipamkara, and later, the Panditas of Magadha transmitting the Dharma to Wang Zangpo and Wangpo. The Indian stories of the three Brahmin Panditas, Bhatta, Ghata, and Kati, differ, and there are also wondrous stories in the writings that emerged from the extensive discussions of scholars. Although I know some of these, I cannot write them all down. Therefore, I have developed even greater faith in those who have become great pillars of the teachings. Here, I have also temporarily brought great benefit to the teachings of the Shravaka vehicle. In particular, I have clarified the Mahayana doctrines practiced by those of supreme intelligence. Those who are hostile to the Buddha's teachings, the followers of the Charvakas, the six types of sophists; those who hold onto doctrines and echo them, such as the Brahmins who transgress caste; and the followers of ascetics, such as the extreme ascetics, totaling six types. With the sharp thorns of three hundred and sixty heretical views, they attempt to destroy the teachings of the Fully Enlightened Buddha. To those who are not deluded by their evil energy and erroneous wisdom, and with the authority of valid reasoning that consumes like fire, and the unobstructed miraculous powers like wind, with their inexhaustible strength, they boast, denigrate, and refute, thus doing the work of a second Buddha. I will greet the realization of those famous great beings, known as the Six Ornaments, Two Excellences, and Four Great Pillars of Jambudvipa, who are like the sun and moon, by telling their stories. I will also briefly narrate the liberation of those who universally and individually illuminate the teachings as a response. Here, let me say that in the land of Champa Arati, there was a king of the solar race named Nrimita, who possessed prosperous wealth. At another time, he united with the wife of a merchant, causing her to become pregnant. One day, in the king's palace, there was a festival to dispel sorrow, and the pregnant woman...

Therefore, the child was named Ashoka (without sorrow). He was brave, tough, proficient in sixty arts and eight types of examination. He was fierce and cruel, and in the early part of the day, he would kill, bind, and beat others, carrying out punishments without restraint. Because his consciousness was not clear, he would not even eat. Under the influence of evil friends, he was zealous in performing sacrifices of life. Later, due to the aspirations of previous lives, the time came when he was taken by a virtuous friend. The Arhat Krakucchanda, with his disciples, through compassion and miraculous powers, completely reversed his previous behavior. He served the Buddha's teachings with unparalleled devotion and became a patron during the Second Council. His dedication to the Dharma even extended to giving up his kingdom, without stinginess or miserliness. From his lineage arose King Chandra Rakshita (Moon Protector) of the land of Odibisha (Oḍiviśa, roughly modern Odisha, India), who was contemporary with King Padma, only slightly later. The noble one, holding a sword, monastic robes, and three articles of clothing, came to his house, taught some Mahayana Dharma, and left a scripture. It is said that this was the beginning of the rise of the Mahayana teachings after the passing of the Teacher. It is said that this appeared during the time of the Third Council, and gradually scriptures of many Dharma categories, such as the Noble Ratnakuta, came from the realms of gods, nagas, gandharvas, and rakshasas, and so on. Many Mahayana monks, who listened to the Dharma from Maitreya and the Three Family Protectors, mastered many sutras, possessed unobstructed wisdom, miraculous powers, and clairvoyance, and had all attained patience, became widely known. However, because the Shravakas did not accept these teachings, they slandered the Mahayana Dharma as not being the Buddha's word. Nevertheless, just as the light of the sun overwhelms other lights, even if only a few Mahayana practitioners exist among thousands of Shravakas, they will not be overwhelmed. Even so, the main purpose of the Third Council was to subdue the Bhikshu Mahadeva, or the Bhikshu who is synonymous with Bhadra, and the death of Mahadeva...
