He saw him arrive at the top of the Bodhi tree. From then on, he was always able to listen to the Dharma from the noble one. For all those in the Sangha who had committed a root downfall of a Bodhisattva, he was able to have them confess their downfalls before the noble Akashagarbha, either in reality or in a dream, and thus break their vows. It is said that he himself and the necessities of life for the Sangha were sufficient by taking them from the treasury of space, without seeking them from benefactors. After Chandrakirti, he became the abbot of glorious Nalanda. He intimidated the heretical opponents with the power of the wrathful king's sharp staff, causing them to be silenced. He composed treatises such as the commentary on the Madhyamaka-catuhshataka (Four Hundred Verses) explained in terms of Vijnanavada (Consciousness-only). At the end of his life, he went to the southern Golden Island (Sumatra). Having closely accomplished the siddhi of essence extraction, it is said that he departed to a place of good writing (possibly referring to a place famous for calligraphy). The great and wonderful being, the master Shantideva, or the God of Peace, was born in the south in Saurashtra, taking birth as the son of a lord of men named Jamyang Gotsa (Loving Armor). There, he maintained a firm chariot of respect for all worthy places, and possessed great compassion for all the poor and helpless, so from that point on, he awakened the lineage of the Great Vehicle. Due to the power of past karmic connections, he saw the face of the noble Manjushri in a dream from his youth. He became skilled in many treatises and arts. When a throne was prepared for him to be enthroned to royal power, he saw the noble Manjushri sitting on the throne in a dream, saying: 'Only child, this is my seat. I am your spiritual friend. For you and I to sit on the same seat, this is not appropriate in any way.' The noble Manjushri gave him permission in the sense of bestowing the great Dharma kingship. Similarly, the noble Tara, taking the form of his own mother, poured hot water from the crown of his head for his bath. When he asked about the touch of the heat, she said: 'Child, kingship is the unbearable hot water of hell, it is about to enthrone you.' He thought to himself: 'Alas, kingship is like a poisonous tree, it is the executioner of the life of liberation and omniscience.' Considering this to be very unsuitable, on the next day...

On the night nearing his appointment as king, he fled. Having traveled for twenty-one days, he was afflicted by thirst and began to drink from a spring at the root of the forest. Then, a girl appeared and said, "That is poisonous water, not fit to drink." After dissuading him, she fed him sweet water and led him to a yogi in a forest cave. That yogi was Manjushri Vajra. The wife of the mason was Tara. There, he developed great admiration for the yogi's liberation of body, speech, and mind, which were gentle and profound, and requested to be accepted as a disciple. The yogi bestowed empowerment and teachings, and he attained countless gates of samadhi and wisdom. From that time on, he was always accompanied by the appearance of the Noble One, carrying a wooden sword with a scabbard, and lived a life of asceticism. Later, he resided in the court of King Singha-hala, being very skilled in all arts and of great intelligence, and vowed to be the guardian of the gods. There, he also promoted all crafts. He had the king rule the kingdom according to Dharma. The other ministers became jealous and reported to the king, "This is a cunning person; even if the sword is made of wood, we should test whether he can be the guardian of the gods." In turn, everyone began to show their weapons before the king. The teacher said, "My sword is unbearable to look at." But they insisted. "Then, cover one eye and look," he said, and as soon as he drew the sword of oath from its sheath, the power of the sword caused the king's other eye to fall to the ground. Because of this, the king and his entourage became frightened and sought refuge in him. The teacher then magically reattached the eye, and the king was greatly convinced. They served him with reverence and asked him to stay, but he did not agree. Instead, he instructed them to rule the kingdom according to Dharma and to establish twenty Buddhist monasteries, and then he went to the central region. At the glorious Nalanda Monastery, he was ordained by Khenpo Gyalwa-la, a descendant of Chandra-gomi, and was given the name Zhiwa-lha (Shantideva). There, he lived with the panditas, and inwardly he listened to the Dharma from the Noble Manjushri, attaining countless gates of samadhi. Studying
