Thus, it was completely restored, just as in the time when the former Arhats upheld the Dharma, the temples in the destroyed areas, named Agra Puri, were restored to their sacred splendor. There, with the truth of completely pure discipline, because it is immeasurable, twelve thousand holders of non-Buddhist views, the powerful one who surpasses the king, Shri Harsha, who temporarily spread in the blazing great fire, whose eyes were cut off and gouged out by the minister Matangagaraja, were also restored by the truth of this teacher's prayer. That king's wisdom became dull, and although he received a vast gathering of enjoyments every day, the twelve qualities that he practiced were: three of food, three of clothing, five of dwellings, and one of posture, not exceeding the place well established by the teacher, so immediately in the great auspicious city of Galava, spreading without aim, etc., are immeasurable qualities. The ornament that makes Jambudvipa beautiful, the author of the treatise, the Lion of Speech, the Elephant of Direction is: although some say he is of the royal family, here following the Indian saying, in the southern city of Singagabakta, near the Kake region, he was born into the Brahmin caste. One who is skilled in non-Buddhist views, became the Khenpo of the Sravaka Sthavira Nikaya, named Elephant Giving. In some places, he became a monk from one named Victorious King. After mastering all the Tripitaka of the Hinayana, he received teachings from Elephant Giving, and proclaimed the inexpressible self. Examining and searching for this, it contradicts the aspect of existence, opening all the windows during the day, lighting butter lamps in the four directions at night, stripping the body naked, and looking repeatedly inside and out, as if busy. When a friend saw this, he told the Khenpo, and the Khenpo asked the reason. I said that because I am dull and lowly, I have not seen the truth proclaimed by the Khenpo, because it is obscured by obscuration, that is why I am looking carefully. Thus, by implication, he showed the reasoning that prevents the Khenpo's intention, and the Khenpo understood, became angry, and ridiculed my view.

He was driven away, for this was no place for arrogance. Thus, the holy ones are skilled in guarding mindfulness, and even if they cannot immediately refute him with wisdom, they will examine him because he is not suitable to be a teacher, and then return him and let him leave. After some time, he went to Nālandā and met the great teacher Dignāga, becoming extremely proficient in the collections of the Great and Small Vehicles, Consciousness-only, and Pramāṇa. He memorized about five hundred sutras. He received a vidyā-mantra from someone who had attained the accomplishment of mantra and practiced it. As a result, he directly saw the noble Mañjuśrī and listened to the Dharma. In a secluded forest in the land called Oḍiviśa, in a cave called Bherasila, he single-mindedly practiced the asceticism of meditation. After some years had passed, in glorious Nālandā, there arrived some non-Buddhist debaters who were skilled in logic and could directly see the deity they desired, who could not be defeated. There, the Buddhists were unable to raise the banner of debate. So they invited the teacher Dignāga. The four great rivers of debate, examination, proof, and refutation raged, and the non-Buddhists, with their arrogant clamor of doctrines, were completely crushed by the seven limbs of Dignāga's reasoning. After being thoroughly crushed, they were placed in the position of converting to the Buddhist doctrine. There, he explained many sutras to the Sangha and promoted the Dharma Abhidharma. In order to eradicate the root cause of wandering in samsara—ignorance—and to generate the antidote to eradicate ignorance—discriminating wisdom—he also composed more than a hundred scattered treatises on Pramāṇa. Later, he thought of turning those systems of logic, guided by the hook of his own extraordinary intelligence, those scattered fragments, into a complete treatise—the Compendium on Valid Cognition (Pramāṇasamuccaya). On the rock face of the residence near Bhramaragiri in the south, he wrote the verses of homage and the vow to compose: Having become an authority, wishing to benefit beings, To the Teacher, the Sugata, the Protector, I pay homage. To accomplish validity, I compose my own treatise.
