Thereafter, the king's power spread to the land under the sun and most of the western regions. All the previously decayed temples were restored, and the Dharma flourished to about forty schools. At Nālandā, two heretical beggars arrived. Monks with lax discipline sprinkled them with foot-washing water, squeezed them between the door frames, and scolded fierce dogs. The two became very displeased. One vowed to curse, and one vowed to practice the sun. So they entered the ground and practiced for nine years without success, and when they intended to leave, the friend said, 'Everywhere is famine, and I have supported you with so much joy, if you go out before you have accomplished the mantra, I will cut off your head.' Saying this, he sharpened a sharp water knife. The man was afraid and practiced for another three years, and finally accomplished it, and began to perform a fire offering. Just by reciting the mantra from the burnt ashes and scattering them, the fire ignited itself. Eighty-four Buddhist temples were burned down. In particular, the great temple of glorious Nālandā, where all the Mahāyāna Dharma resided, the three temples called Ratna Sāgara (藏文:རཏྣ་ས་ག་ར།,梵文天城体:रत्न सागर,梵文罗马拟音:Ratna Sāgara,汉语字面意思:宝海), Ratna Dadhi (藏文:རཏྣ་ད་དྷི།,梵文天城体:रत्न दधि,梵文罗马拟音:Ratna Dadhi,汉语字面意思:宝藏), and Ratna Raṇḍaka (藏文:རཏྣ་རཎྜ་ཀ་,梵文天城体:रत्न रण्डक,梵文罗马拟音:Ratna Raṇḍaka,汉语字面意思:宝饰) were all burned down. The temple called Ratna Dadhi (藏文:རཏྣ་ད་དྷི།,梵文天城体:रत्न दधि,梵文罗马拟音:Ratna Dadhi,汉语字面意思:宝藏) had nine stories, and a great stream of water flowed from some of the scriptures on the top floor, extinguishing the burning fire, so some scriptures were not burned and were known as the treasury of the Vidyādharas. The two heretics, fearing the king's punishment, fled to a place called Hāsama in the north, but due to the power of sin, their bodies caught fire and died. Similarly, when the teacher Nāgārjuna was doing beneficial deeds in the south, the religion of the Muslims began to spread. When he was staying on Mount Palava, the minister of King Nema Chandra, named Gyalshay, started a rebellion and seized the kingdom for himself. At Nālandā, the sound of striking the Ghaṇṭā became 'Phaṭ Ṭāya' (藏文:ཕཊ་ཊཱ་ཡ་,梵文天城体:फट् टाय,梵文罗马拟音:Phaṭ Ṭāya,汉语字面意思:帕达亚). The Brahmin phonologists understood this as the sound of 'crushing the heads of the wicked heretics.' So, the Brahmins Gyalshay and others fought with the heretics, and many temples from the central region to Jālandhara were burned and razed to the ground, and many learned monks were also killed.
