The rude ones mostly remained silent. Having settled down, the flames of arrogance blazed fiercely again. The so-called glorious Nālandā became an important gathering place for all Buddhist scholars. Each erected the victory flag of their own doctrine and set a time to drive the chariot of debate. Although the Buddhist paṇḍitas were disheartened, they pretended to set a time for debate so that the teacher could arrive in time. Then, a torma was offered to Mahākāla, and an emanation crow appeared, with a letter inviting the teacher tied around its neck, and it was sent away. The crow conveyed the message to the teacher, who relied on the power of swift walking to travel. On the way, he encountered a goddess named Vṛkṣadevatā, who belonged to a non-Buddhist lineage, was greedy and stingy. For the sake of obtaining the substance of accomplishment, she demanded the eye of a learned bhikṣu, and the teacher gave her one eye. After that, the teacher arrived at Nālandā in just one hour. When the non-Buddhists came to challenge, their allies, including the sister paṇḍita, parrots, Thole Kore, the unfaithful lay practitioners, cats, and jars filled with black oil, were defeated. At that time, someone said to shame the teacher with one eye, the teacher replied: 'The fierce one, though having three eyes, does not see the truth; Indra, though having a thousand eyes, does not see the truth; Āryadeva, who has only one eye, sees all three realms.' Using this as the opening to defeat the previous challengers, the fire of argumentative and refuting words was ignited, blazing fiercely, completely burning the jungle of evil doctrines, severing the connection with Īśvara and its lineage, and cutting off the paths that could be confused with mantras. Seeing that the time for taming had matured, the teacher imprisoned them in a cleverly set prison in the temple. There, they read the scriptures, saw the sutras prophesying themselves, and deeply regretted what they had done against the Dharma before. Their faith in the Buddha grew day by day, and they eventually renounced and became great paṇḍitas holding the three baskets, blessed as unparalleled.

The great teacher, at the feet of the Hero. Such a noble teacher eventually went to the southern regions and performed great deeds for sentient beings. He extensively taught the meaning of freedom from extremes, composed countless sutra and tantra treatises such as the Four Hundred Verses of the Middle Way, and greatly benefited the teachings. In a place called Raṃganāthā near the land of Kañci, he entrusted the teachings of meaning to the fully empowered bhikṣu, the master of the three baskets, Sgra gcan 'dzin bzang po (Rāhula Bhadra), and then passed into parinirvana. One of the four great ones, praised by prophecy for praising the supreme teacher, is the teacher Mati Citra, or the Hero: In the city of Khor tana, there was a merchant who had ten daughters, all of whom were devoted to the Three Jewels. The youngest one went to the house of a wealthy Brahmin named Saddha guhya, and gave birth to a son named Black. Because he was very respectful to his parents, he was also known as Father's Slave and Mother's Slave. He became proficient in the Vedas and their branches. Because his mother had faith in Buddhism, he wanted to enter the Buddhist school, but due to his father's influence, he became a follower of the non-Buddhist school. He was very sharp in the practice of mantra tantras and in logic. He practiced the great god Īśvara, who directly prophesied and gave him three siddhis. He also vowed that if he did not win in debate, Īśvara himself would enter his heart. Therefore, his arrogance greatly increased, and he went to places such as Kāmarūpa, Tira huti, Gaur, and Auḍa biśa, and defeated the Buddhists in debate. Some were led to wrong views. Some were robbed of their monastic robes. Some were forced to pay homage to non-Buddhists, and so on, and were humiliated. Mani, having taken refuge in the Three Jewels, thought to himself: If he goes to Nalanda, he will be defeated by the champions of debate, the accomplished masters of vidyā-mantras, and will enter the Buddhist path. Then (Mani) said: Listen, child, the Buddhists of other lands are like the hairs in a horse's ear. The Buddhists of Magadha are like the body of a horse. If you do not conquer the people of Magadha, then wanting to gain the reputation of a debater is weak. So he went to Magadha.
